Coin buying has been slow since I had to buy a new computer, but below is a new addition to my tetradrachm hoard. I have several Severus Alexander Tets. but this is may be the nicest and the rarest. This is also pretty rare. Severus Alexander (222 - 235 A.D.) Egypt, Alexandria Billon Tetradrachm O: Α ΚΑΙ ΜΑΡ ΑΥΡ СƐΥ ΑΛƐΞΑΝΔΡΟС ƐΥ laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander, r., seen from rear. R: Nilus bust r., draped and wearing lotus wreath; to l., cornucopia on shoulder, r.; in front, palm branch L I = 10 Alexandria Mint 23mm 13.7g Emmett 3122.10 (R3), Milne 3031; Dattari 4331 Pending wildwinds publishing
Lovely new addition, Mat. My favorite one is from his Year 2. He should have been about 15 years old at the time, but the portrait makes him look like a chubby-cheeked child.
The OP coin is excellent. My favorite year for Severus Alexander is year 5. Here is one: Severus Alexander, Roman style Alexandria tetradrachm 28-25 mm. 13.89 grams. Year 5 Obverse legend: A KAI M AVP CEOVHR AΛEΞANΔPOC EVCEB Reverse: L ΠEMΠTOY MAMEA CEB, bust of his mother Julia Mamaea right Fifth year. Mamaea Augusta Sear II 8134. My web site explains why year 5 is so interesting: http://augustuscoins.com/ed/SevAlex/
I have two tetradrachms of Severus Alexander, nice enough but not very special. Dated RY 4 (224/5). Obv. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. Tyche reclining left on lectisternium (couch), holding rudder, resting elbow on pile of pillows and leaning head on hand. 21 mm, 14.48 gr. Emmett 3140.4. From the Hermanubis Collection. Dated RY ς (6, = 226/7). Obv. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. 22 mm, 12.57 gr. Rev. Eagle, standing left, head t.r., wreath in beak. Emmett 3099.6.From the Hermanubis Collection.
Great tets of Alexander Severus everybody. OP coin is fantastic. Since these are not exactly common this represents some great grabs.
