Here is a scarce fellow that I have needed for awhile and won at an affordable price. Aelius (136 - 138 A.D.) AR Denarius O: L AELIVS CAESAR, bare head right. R: TR POT COS II, Felicitas standing left, caduceus in left, cornucopia in right. Rome Mint, 137 A.D. 3.16g 18mm SRCV II 3973, RIC II Hadrian 430, RSC II 50, BMCRE III Hadrian 969
SWEET! Aelius was a major score for me last year! Aelius Caesar, 136-138 AD, AE drachm O: bust r. draped, R: Homonia seated on throne l., holding patera. A cornucopia at her side. Ref. Dattari 2076 BMC 923 Alexandria 33 mm, 22.1g
Thats a very nice denarius Mat , congrats. Unfortunely Aelius never became emperor , he died a couple of months before Hadrian , who then appointed Antoninus Pius instead.
Great portrait! I'm sure that Hadrian didn't mind having such a handsome man under him... Here is mine AELIUS (Caesar, 136-138). Denarius. Rome. Obv: L AELIVS CAESAR. Bare head right. Rev: TR POT COS II. Pietas standing left, raising hand to drop incense onto lighted and garlanded altar to left. RIC 432 (Hadrian). Weight: 2.75 g.Diameter: 17
WOW @Mat , nice! Beard details, hair, all real good. Congrats on the snag. I have an Aelius: RI Aelius Caesar 138 CE AE As 26mm Rome mint Fortuna-Spes cornucopia and rudder
I know you have a talent for picking up bargains... I dread to think how much less you paid for yours than I did for this one, many years ago! Nice score, for sure.
@Bing Yeah I have a similar example. At least I think I do, given the portrait and what I can make out of the legends. @Mat I nominate this coin for deal of the day. For real. I haven’t even bothered looking for an Aelius denarius because I thought there was no way they could be in my price range.
Nice addition, Mat... I especially like the portrait. AELIUS AR Denarius. 3.34g, 17.6mm. Rome mint, AD 136-138. RIC 1024 (Hadrian). O: L AELIVS CAESAR, bare head right. R: TR POT COS II, Spes advancing left, holding up flower in right hand and raising skirt with left.
Aelius had some very aesthetic coins, as evidenced by this thread. Here's him in gold and left facing:
