I won these in a slot machine in '04 at the Cal-Neva Casino in Reno, NV. They were in a machine that was 25c per pull, and the wife and I spent around $25 and got these two. They also had a machine that was loaded with gold eagle coins for $1 a pull, dropped about $40 in that one, but came up empty. Wish I'd had more money to spend-would've been there all day.
I assume that they are both genuine, but they both look a bit suspicious. That is a nice score though, the silver content alone is worth $25.89 each. Whenever I go to Harrah's down here and break even, I consider it a victory.
I think that they are genuine, but there is something about the look of the coins that doesn't match everyday wear. It could be that these coins were counted with automated counters so many times that it started to leave some surface abrasions in unusual places. It doesn't really affect the value either way though. These dates are very common in high grades, so they would only be worth melt value anyway. Besides, I'm sure that winning them was priceless to you and your wife.
Not to be Debby Downer, but in '04, melt would've been closer to $5 each. If you were just out to win silver, you'd still have gotten a better return on eBay.
From what I can make out, I think they are both fake. There are just too many little inconsistencies particularly on that 1923. It would be interesting to know their weigh, though.
I have no reason to think they are fake, but have never weighed them. We have a triple beam scale at work, so I can weigh them on monday. The peace dollar does have a weak look to the back, so I understand your concerns.
Stick a magnet on them! The Morgan looks right but I would say the Peace Dollar may be a fake. Hope I'm wrong tho.
Ya know, I have to think that any casino taking people's money for a chance at silver dollars, then dispensing fake base-metal or silver-plated-steel dollars, would've been in for a world of hurt. Even when silver was just $5/ozt.
You asked so here is a Morgan pictured from Heritage and your picture marked where I see differences. They are all minor, but they add up.
You guys make some compelling points on this. We will see what the scale says about the weight. Nothing I can really do if they are not right. It was fun playing for them. On that trip we also went to the mint in Carson City. They had a wall with examples of all the coins minted there. I took some pictures and video while we were there, I will post them if I can find them. We moved a short while ago and lots of stuff has not been unpacked as we have less room here.
So long as they are silver, you will do alright. That is about all the coins would be worth whether real or fake (silver fake, that is).
Got a chance to weigh them and here are the numbers: Morgan - 26.7 grams with the pointer about 1/3 between 7/10 and 8/10. Peace - 26.6 grams with the pointer just shy of halfway between 6/10 and 7/10. Peace is slightly under weight. Normal?
