Well what can one say after reading these posts LOL my better half collects coins in a small way only those with a wolf on or if they are from Russia, we also share a love of trading cards, some sets overlap (we have a few joint collections) She has no objection to going to coin fairs with me as she finds them interesting and loves medal fairs because of the diversity of things usualy on display (Very into history) But most men I know dont collect anything LOL and most Ladies I know do collect something :kewl: be it China, wade figures, thimbles, Stamps, Teddy bears the list is quite long
I've said it before, but maybe this age old notion of coin collectors being crusty old men is regional in nature. I've been collecting over 25 years now and for that entire time I've noticed at shows in my area, as well as in the local coin shops, that women make up at least a third of the collectors. Most being young, the same as the men I see at the same places. Maybe the Southwest is the equivelent to some sort of numismatic bizarro world, I don't know. Guy~
I was being a little on the fun side before. Those were the old days when that is what most households were like. My wife is a farmers daughter. She changes the oil in the car, rotates tires, has done the brakes on one of my cars and probably knows more about engines than most men. Loves guns and she has hers and I have mine. But coins? Just no interest. Same with my Son. Just no interest. It's weird though that women, not all, but as a rule just don't like hobbies like guns, coins, cars, etc. Although so many women today could do those things, they just don't. For those that don't go to gun shows, you would see even less women than at coin shows. Can't remember ever seeing a women at a knife show.
And that too may be true. Sort of the same thing with coin collecting items. For example it is common for people in the West to use and mention Dansco for coins where as in the Mid West all I see is Whitman. Not sure where Littleton is popular. At all the coin shows in the Illinois area a female as a dealer is just not there. As collectors I seldom see any at all. Men that bring their kids are usually the male kids, seldom a girl. One dealer occationally brings his daughters but you can see the lack of interest. Going to 2 to 4 coin shows a month for many, many years I just can not remember ever seeing a female dealer here in Illinois. And the ages of most collectors at times makes me feel young and I'm really old.
Carl, if you gone to Central States in Chicago last year, you would have seen at least one female coin dealer!
That much should be obvious - don't know as I would go far as to say we welcome him, but we do allow spock to join in after all
I don't know Carl. I go to shows in St. Louis 3 or 4 times a year, and I always see women on the bourse. It is always less than 10 percent, but they're always there. Women brousing, or taking their sons or daughters to the show. Alot of women helping husbands who are dealers. There is one young lady who I always see helping an older man who I've always assumed was her father, but this girl really seems to know what she's doing too. There is also a female dealer who always works her table on her own who I see at alot of those shows. I've actually done business with her several times because not only is she one of the most friendly dealers thereshe is knowledgable and her prices are fair as well. Again, the percentage is small, but I do see womenat every show and I'm in the midwest too.
Personally gender really doesn't matter to me as far as numismatics. I don't care if the person I buy the coin from is a man or woman, ; I care about the coin and the Integrity of the dealer. There may be many more men in the profession than women at this time, however the number of women is ever increasing and thats a good thing. My daughter absolutely loves coins and my wife doesn't care for them. My wife does like it when I sell some bullion or coins and let her go on a shopping spree!!! LOL Harry
It's hard to write this without sounding, in a prima facie way at least, as if I'm sexist, but one thing I LIKE about coin collecting is that there aren't many women in it. Much less stress and hassle, can act more informally, talk and act a bit freer. I think even women can appreciate that sometimes it's just good to be around your own gender for a time.
My wife was a collector before we met... Now she is in hog heaven... shes about to finish her US type set.
I would not legislate against women coin collecting, so take it easy, please. I'm just a guy who occasionally likes not having to always be hanging out with women! Nothing wrong with that; in fact, women have always been pretty upfront about liking time doing things with only their female friends. So it goes. I know this is one appeal of spectator sports for some percentage of males.
This is true of 99% of men, myself included. In contrast, many women prefer women. It's sexist when men do it, so it's sexist when women do it. Anything less is a sexist double standard... ...which is what women claimed they were trying to eradicate. Why not ? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Odd that you have to "apologize" or ask anyone to "take it easy". Women feel very free to make statements like yours; do you think any of them would need to say "take it easy, please" ? Of course not. Todd, I support you 100%. No one is criticizing women on coin collecting. It's the women who keep bringing up the issue. The door is wide open, and you are totally accepted, by myself and others... as this thread proves. If you want to write books, write 'em. As it sits, virtually all of them are written by men. Wanna write ? Write. Wanna collect ? Collect. Wanna complain ? Don't.
my grandma is one of the biggest coin collectors i know. she has rolls of wheat pennies from every year they were made and even a 1908 quarter eagle in great condition
