You know, it wouldn't be beyond someone's capacity to purchase replica double eagles on fleabay, artificially "doctor" them and get their local cashier fired for cashing those in either. You can buy one for around $5...what a scam. Not that I would ever dream of doing it, except that I did kinda just come up with that didn't I? I'm just saying, in theory, how do you authenticate something like that unless you ARE an experienced numismatic enthusiast? They are dumping out new gold toned dollars by the buckets these days and someone who doesn't know any better could get royally...you know. The cashier shouldn't have, but I can understand why. It's they kind of thing people like us dream about after all. Those coins, that's enough for a new car or whatever. Jackpot. I have no idea but I would say most tellers don't know or care about numismatics...they probably get sick of counting money. I doubt the bank manager is going around saying "keep an eye out for little old ladies with double eagles..."

I firmly believe that the educated numismatist should have the advantage in cash transactions over the layman. I wouldn't tell someone to save their wheat penny when they could give it to me. I know what it is and appreciate it. That cashier didn't subscribe to an ethics policy like a coin dealer would. She didn't ask him to appraise her coins. On the other hand, if someone did that to my mom I'd skin the guy alive and then feed him to pigs. Huh. This one makes my head hurt. I'd like to see those coins authenticated. :headbang: ugh! ugh! ugh!
