Speedy, have you seen some of what Scumburger 'Grading' 'Service' does with very well-circulated coins? MS grade, come off it.It is as bad as grading a G grade coin as Proof.

I wonder what the A.N.A. have got to say about these self-slabbers who can't even grade to save themselves.

Daggarjon, the purpose of the CT Numismatic Hall of Shame is to educate both old & new people so that they don't throw away their hard-earned money. We're supposed to try & fight fraud, not stay silent on this.

i agree.. we should educate .. but you dont educate someone by telling them a sellers name and tell them to stay away. I think what Speddy was trying to say .. is that we need to talk about whay a coin is bad, talk and teach new comers and old (like me) they ways to identify the bad coins for ourselves. Telling somone to stay away form seller is not going to teach them why.

I am reminded of al old parable --
Give a man a fish, he will eat for a day
Teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime

the list will be like giving them the fish
talking about why the coins are bad, and teaching new comers to the hobby how to identify the bad coins is like teaching them to fish... once they know, they will have a MUCH better chance of succeeding in the future.

Daggarjon, you have got a point there, but even posting a link to a dud item being auctioned into the Numismatic Hall Of Shame can send a powerful message. You don't have to say the vendor's name.Any member would be able to work out why it is posted in there.

That is the most ridiculous statement you have ever made on this forum!

No one has yet invented a method to prevent frivolous lawsuits from being filed, let alone those that might go either way.

The expense of proving in a court of law that someone is a "genuine scammer", even if true, could easily prove to be financially ruinous.

In courts of the United States (state or federal), one who successfully defends against a defamation claim does not recover his/her attorney fees and other litigation expenses; and one who wants to file such a claim need not pay his/her own attorney upfront, relying instead on a contingent fee. I'm guessing that New Zealand follows the very different practices prevalent in the United Kingdom and other members of the Commonwealth of Nations, prohibiting contingent fees and requiring the loser to pay the winner's attorney fees in most litigation.

BTW, being a part time coin store employee in New Zealand does not qualify you as an expert entitled to testify in a US court whether someone is, or is not, a "genuine" scammer"; and it certainly does not make your opinion controlling on a US court.

This is not the first time you have made absolutely incorrect statements about US law, and the time has come to cut it out! Please do not write a Wikipedia article on US defamation law and then cite it as proof that your knowledge is greater than mine in an area I have studied and worked in since long before you were born.

Roy,you're right about New Zealand following the English practice of requiring the losing party to pay the winning party's fees in addition to the fees they they incur. For poorer litigants, legal aid can be applied for in some cases.

I have never written an article on Wikipedia about U.S. law,nor have I ever had any intention of doing so.

About the genuine scammers,it is only the really bad ones of the Estatedoctor type that would go into the Numismatic Hall of Shame. That is what I was meaning, not the small-time vendors who genuinely don't know about coins.

An excellent point Daggarjon, very well thought out. I can see having a catagory on the forum about authenticity. Members could share information on detecting counterfits, tooling, cleaning, altering, and everything else that is common amongst fraudsters. Members could post auctions they find of interest to get opinions on authenticity as well as use them as tools to teach other members what to look for, making it a forum rule to not bash the seller or fraudster, but to keep the discussion limited to education, discussion, and communication of the "problem" coin in question, I think it would be benificial to a lot of folks, and if it saves one person the headache and expense of a poor coin choice, I think it would be worth it!!

    Knowledge... Share it!!!!

    Buffalo DDO,

A common thing for people in your situation to do would be to send the coin to a third party grader like
PCGS, ICG, NGC, or ANACS. this would provide a third party verification to the authenticity.

Your auction raises many red flags and will result in fewer people having bidded than had the coin been certified.

Please do not take offense to this discussion, but be aware that many fraudulent auctions on ebay have common elements and your listing contains many of them. The act of certifying the coin would supercede many of those red flags (things like poor english, coin is in a different location than seller, low feedback rating, few auctions related to coins, ...)

The only red flag that certifying the coin doesn't address is the question of whether or not you physically own the coin, but that can easily be handled by using a well known escrow service or physically meeting in person (not out of the question considering the value of the coin).

Well, of course Aidan although I do have a blog. Just never have time to work on it as I'm always here or at work!
Subject of the blog? Mainly bogus TGPs. How's that for a surprise.

    Hello Martikka07

I'm sorry to inform you of this but I am BEYOND skeptical about your auction.
I just checked out your other auction
    "Pre-columbian #3 CHANCAY WARRIOR VESSEL ... AWESOME"

I know this was generated with the help of a template but the command of the English language is certainly much better.

I also noted in your 1916 DDO auction that you were able to include tables from the PCGS price guide. Now, if you know that much about PCGS would you not want to get the coin graded by them and sell accordingly?
Just looking at the great pictures and detailed statistics on this coin would indicate to me that you did a great deal of research on this coin.
In your Cointalk post you say you have consulted Heritage, Stacks and others. Even with the fees they charge a rarity like this would go for some good money. More than an ebay I'd be willing to bet.

It would seem to me, in short, that if someone spent this much time researching a coin that they would sell it at the highest possible level - not on ebay with limited experience.
Perhaps you don't want the coin to trouble you but would a few thousand more dollars bother you that much? Like maybe in a bank account?

If you are that concerned just send it to me and I'll put it in a safe deposit box and insure it. You can visit it whenever you want. I'll even buy lunch.

    Please address my questions.

    Sincerely,

    clembo

I miss some of the funny ebay postings that come thru here so I wanted to add that I found today....

We all know about the popularity of the Reverse proof Silver Eagles right?
Well now is the chance to own the rare......Reverse Proof Eisenhower Dollar :headbang:

ok, this is NOT my coin lol

I had to ask the seller what they were smoking when they saw reverse proofing, and then thought it actually existed.......:eek:dd:
