I saw the reverse die crack when I first discovered the coin, and thought for awhile on it, if it would bother me or not. I bought this coin from a dealer, not at auction, so I thought good and hard on it before pulling the trigger, as this wouldn't work with my typical low-ball "marker" bids on GreatCollections. In the end I actually thought the die breaks were pretty cool, as I have almost no coins with errors. I believe the die cracks lead to the lamination issue, but since it was sort of inline with the cracks and even some toning streaks, I also ended up deciding that it didn't bother me at all, as it was "mostly intact" and not really "flaking off" as some lamination errors look like. As you know, I am not much or an error collector, or even knowledgeable at all about errors, so I am not 100% proficient with the nomenclature or the process by which one error/problem creates another problem. You toss on some clashed dies, both obverse and reverse, which are very common on Three Cent nickels, and I thought this was sort of a trifecta of minor errors that was really representaive of the Type in general. I dont like it when the clashed dies overwhelm the coin, but for my example here, I thought to myself, well you can see them, but it doesnt ruin the coin. This is how I saw the coin when I toyed with it for a few days before contacting the dealer: A pristine example might have been nice, already CAC'd, but every time I saw the coins over more than 12 months of searching, they were either very mushy in the details of the roman numerals ( III ), which is very common problem with the strike in this series, or they went for more money than I wanted to spend, $300+. So, maybe I am rationalizing it, but it really was my thinking at the time, I like this coin, the toning, the die cracks, the clashing, and the amount of detail from the strike, the luster, and even the price. Even right now as I type this, I still really like this coin. In terms of "scratches" that is something I did NOT see, and I still not sure where you are seeing those on this coin. I never once thought scratches, so maybe don't point them out (unless you feel you absolutely must) so that I never see them. I don't want this to be like an orange peel situation with car paint, where once you see it, you can never unsee it and it sort of ruins 99% of all paint jobs. No, I personally dont think this die cracks or lamination will play much into CAC's thinking or the TPG grade. Ignorance is bliss, or is this a chocolate vs vanilla type of situation?
