I know right now there's not much if any premium for nice coins that are considered junk silver but could this change? What happens if there is a big melt and then crash? Even common old gold coins have premiums over spot. I'm a long term investor so I am thinking if there is a crash should I go into 90% junk and old gold or stick with modern bullion.

This is just my opinion, but I would opt for the 1961-1964 proof sets. You can get these for $8-$10 each and the 10c, 25c & 50c coins contain .61487 oz of silver. At the current price of $29.17, each of these sets have $17.94 worth of silver. Why pay a premium over spot for modern bullion?

Probably most of the silver melt coins won't be melted. They are scooped up by investors and will remain in tact.

If you expect a silver crash in the near future, holding silver in any form will be a blunder.

Where are you seeing silver proof sets for half of bullion value? Certainly not on eBay or at a coin store...?

I have a local source who, in his own words, has made his share of profit from buying and selling, and doesn't mind passing along the opportunity to another. He's a retired coin shop owner.

So you're giving this source to the OP so he can buy at that price?

Nothing changed on what America owes in the last week. J.P. Morgan is still short 130Million ounces via contracts and who knows how that will be manipulated. Silver could put in a hard bottom and then move back up much higher.
Inflation has already been printed. Gold and silver will be in the mind of all who know after this PONZI scheme that has been perpetrated on Americans. What makes people feel safe will be what they buy .

I'm a Cent collector. So I dumped the silver to buy more Cents and take my Wife out a few times on our anniversary which we celebrate several times rather than once a year.

Chris is definitely right about the sets...every I looked at on proof set on provident metals between 60-70 is sold out and priced around $10 but mostly less...

He was talking about the 1960 to 1964 90% silver sets. None of which are (or were recently) available anywhere near $10. You're looking at sets the have 1 40% Kennedy half in them. If he's got some guy willing to sell to him for half of melt value that's great, but 99.9% of the world doesn't have that and won't find that.

I believe classic silver dollars (in decent shape of VG or better) are a good buy if purchased around melt price. These were selling for about $15/each when silver was $10/ounce. Now with silver at $29 they're $22-$23 dollars. If silver falls back to $20/oz, they'll still be worth about $20 and if silver goes to $40/oz they'll be worth $32-$33 each.

Whatever you buy, search for silver the can be bought for under melt price. 90% silver U.S. coins are often available under melt with silver prices as high as they are these days.

Ah, I see. So what you really mean to say was "I can get these for $8-10 each". :)

Rick Trasco has made a lot of money off of Kennedy's

If you can get an 1964-1970-D MS-66 -68 or a 1968-S 1971-S PR-66-69 D Cam they do hold there price.

What crash? Someone going to unload tons and tons of silver on the markets?

When you think about it, tons and tons of silver is still a very small amount of money. A crash is a very small probability event at this time.
