How can I tell a business coin from proof coin. This is a 1998 wide AM, so if it is a business strike it's a bit more rare?
I see a wide AM. Notice the filled lower steps near the right. Similar to yours. Looks like a business strike, IMO.
Nice wide AM. Proofs have be made in San Francisco since 1968 and have a S mint mark sans a few varieties. Most, if not all, are listed in the Red Book. Yours is a business strike. There are no known 1998 proofs missing the mint mark listed.
I'd like to say, no matter how minor an error may be, it is exciting for me. I showed up late to the party in this hobby, with thousands of coin enthusiasts out there and if errors are found damage is likely. The challenge is greater than ever. My opinion and why I love this hobby.
Yep. It's about the hunt, isn't it? As already stated by other, it appears to be a business strike wide AM, but keep on lookin'.
Still an interesting question. AFAIK the easiest way to distinguish a proof is to look at the edge. A proof coin has an edge that is 90 degrees, a business strike has a champfer.
This might help. The first image is a proof. Take note of the mirror look of the fields and the square look of the rims.
