Sorry - I messed up my message and it ran into the quote. My message was: I was obviously in error when I suggested such a scenario ... thanks to 'paddyman98', my question has been answered - it is a bezel, which I should have realized! I guess the question now is "should I remove the bezel and have a low-quality IHC coin(?), or should I leave it alone and fantasize about it's history? I would really like to know what others think.
They used a lot of 1907 coins during the civil war for that very purpose. But like Honest Abe said right before he cut down the cherry tree, "Don't believe everything you read on the internet."
Gregg, you spoke about the American Civil War, of the 1860's, and hollowed out coinage to hide microfiche. Whilst there is no reason to disbelieve you, could you provide any specific example, with details ? It appears to be a fascinating part of American history.
I've looked up the spy coins online. Not only were they used in the Civil War, but also in the Second World War plus during the Cold War. Personally, I can accept that such coins did, and do, exist.
You can bet that in 1860 the last place they'd look for a hidden message is in a 1907 penny. It is brilliant if you think about it.
I apologize and meant no offence. You are correct in the observation that someone with as many posts as me shouldn't get a get out of jail card, and I don't want one. I'm sorry this fellow is so stick straight that he can't take a little 'ribbing', so in the future I shall refrain from responding to him.
The irony here is that I am the least 'stick-straight fellow' you could ever hope to meet! I thrive on good -natured ribbing and sarcasm, but only when I'm sure that it is good-natured ... if not, get ready to grab your ankles! Your loss!
So you're one of those 'time is linear Nazi science deniers'! (1) NOTES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1: The most important part of winning a debate on the internet is the task of labeling your opponent.
Labelling me as a "time is linear Nazi science denier", or whatever else gobbledegook you come up with, Gregg, wins you no debate. In fact, you are falling flat on your face, like a coin-shaped pancake !!!
