Here's my '41-S Large S, except 5 times larger... LOL What was the deal back in 1941? They made a large S Nickel, Dime and Quarter. Did someone bring in a homemade tool that they wanted to try out?
Well, this one only cost me $8 this time... Side note: the coin from the OP is currently awaiting NGC's opinion on grade. Will definitely share once it gets posted. Here are a couple closeups of the MM...I'm...I'm kind of seeing an OMM. Not sure what Ribar/Wiles/Wexler would say...but I'll share and see what you have to say: Third image, maybe a bit clearer. Not sure if it's a damaged/worn mintmark punch, or an OMM:
Coneca RPM #1 . The die gouge in the " 9 " is the marker I'm using . http://varietyvista.com/05 JN RPMs/1941SRPM001.htm
Haha thanks, Rick...how funny that I had enough energy to image the mintmark three times, but not to check Variety Vista. Lazyyyyyyyy Looks like mine is somewhere between stage A and stage B. Cool. Now I have a nice one one of these
Well, anyone want to take a shot at a GTG for the first coin (the $9 one?) Grades just posted for my NGC submission...
I am gonna say MS 64, I am not to sure what they thought about the dings across the steps. The obv seems to be struck well.
The original $9 coin is gorgeous and extremely clean. I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict MS67. And yes, I am still jealous.
I remember when I first read this thread, I thought that $9 would be a steal for a standard 41-S nickel because I knew it would grade MS66 minimum. When you updated the thread and asked for a GTG, I pretty much knew it went MS67.
It will be interesting to see what the second coin from this thread does when I submit it in July before taking a vacation (first break in years) along with my growing bulk submission of jeffersons. Got one in there that I'm sure will go AT but I'm going to submit it anyway just to see lol
Touché, I would have never guess that, that many planchet marks could be present, even as weakly struck as the reverse is. Guess I need to sharpen my skills.
