Why Star between two Crescents?

    The Pontic symbol without doubt is Star and single Crescent below. But on Athenian allied coinage- the New Style coinage in Gold and silver is star between TWO crescents-no doubt especially when the first magistrate is names as King Mithradates. The AE coinage Zeus hurling thunderbolt, (fulminating Zeus) with the Star between 2 crescents symbol is contemporary with the silver and gold.
    But why TWO crescents?
    What are the theories...I have never ever heard of a theory that accounts for this.
