Come to think of it, how cool would it be to get a worn Buffalo set or Mercury set. I must have been looking at this hobby all wrong... Maybe not?

hehe a lot of us like our coins with "history" imprinted on them.. and MS70 is a beautiful thing but it has never "done" anything either. :D

I think we broaden our views of the hobby. No wrong way to view it...just creative ways that may suit you and nobody else. And that is actually fine. That environmental set I mentioned was actually one of the coolest collections I ever saw. Many 'cameo'-like nickels displayed adjacent to others. Most folks would toss a damaged coin back to the wild, but this collector saw something else and the outcome, in my opinion, was a homerun. I started setting environmental coins of interest aside myself (when I CRHed a bit).

Another member of CT posted photos of his largely, circulated series sets. He luckily got the head start on most of us and set his finds aside as a kid, when some heroes finds today were quite common. Many worn coins...worthy of a coin folder. Terrific to view and appreciate, especially those that have attempted to build sets from change and CRH. I also appreciate the MS sets others have compiled. I have sets of each myself and appreciate them for what they are and what it took to put together. The main point is the fun in the collecting...trading...online hunting for the specimen to fill a spot. If it weren't...would it be worth doing? Most of us will never have high-value sets. Nothing we will retire on...and few with families that will even understand what we compiled. So for me, the thrill of the hunt...the appreciation of coins folks here are willing to share with the community...and the comradery of the fellow enthusiasts is enough. It's all good.

I find it impossible that's regular (genuine) circulation wear. The last half dollar that saw workhorse circulation was the Walking Liberty. I don't know why but using 50C coins seemed to fall out of flavor starting with Franklyn halves. I own hundreds of 50c pieces starting with the Barber series and CRH'ed enough Kennedy rolls to know that kind of circulation wear simply didn't occur naturally on a Kennedy half. Grading that coin as genuine is an insult to my intelligence.
Low ball sets are all the rage right now. Could it be that the TPG is grading this very obvious fake as genuine to generate business? i.e. The population of high end gradable coins is shrinking, so let's expand our market base to include the lowest of the low.

ok everybody i am about to show you a coin, a dealer in Naugatuck, the first show i had done in 35 years or so, i did not sell anything but one half cent at cost to the dealer next to me, but i got a lot of goodies , among them is a junk box i bought everything the guy had, at 2 X face, i figured could at least melt it for the silver and make 50 cents, but ya know what, i might just slab it and sell it, lol here it is my lowball Kennedy i bought for 1.00 @paddyman98 268013448_956423555271790_639334518519280443_n.jpg 268904260_203699218549756_2110244283216591874_n.jpg 269599357_625459698695805_8963789460952318473_n.jpg

You guys are sooo cool! I think I am going to work on the Walking Liberty Halves and then expand to the Franklin Halves. As far as the Kennedy Halves, I think that I will only collect silver halves with wear. I might even work back to Barber Halves. I think that those collections can be as hard as getting Mint State coins.
