I meant Early Commems. My favorite modern commem is definitely the Leif Ericson. Cool all the way around.

You know what? I really want one of these.
Its over 100 years old, and you can get them for next to nothing, and its an important piece of history.
I looked them up in the 2009 red book and indeed they are cheap.
I'm going to drive over to the American side of Niagara Falls next month and see if I can track one down.

I see columbians at every shop I visit. They are everywhere, now of someone were to snatch up a million or so or a ton of em went into the smelter and suddenly there were very few, the price might go up $2, if you're lucky. They just aren't sought after coins the way some other series are. Compare if you will the 1916D mercury dime and the 1914 S barber quarter. Both have about the same mintage around 264,000 yet the dime goes for $800-1000 in G-4 the quarter goes for $60-70. Again for instance take the 1909S VDB and the 1913 quarter, about the same mintage. Prices the 1909 in G $700-800 the 1913...$25 is it fair, no is it reality yes. But why??? because those coins are more widely collected and sought after than their contemporaries, just like most commems are greatly underapreciated.

If I could enlighten just one other person to how cool this coin is than I have done my job in this post ;-)

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

As the first commemorative, these coins survived in huge numbers. Because supply outstrips demand, the price of these coins has remained low.

As everyone has said, since they were released both in circulation and for collectors, plus there were millions of them. There is too many and many people don't collect the older commemoratives as much as the circulation pieces.
