Why is the 2008 Proof Set so expensive on the secondary market?

Was there an error in the proof set? I looked at the mintage figures in the red book and it doesnt seem to be because of low mintage? Thanks for any information you can provide me on this.

Red book has it listed at 90 and i see them going for 80+ on ebay? What was so special about this year?

I recently picked up two 2008 Proof sets on eBay for approx. $50 each.

These sets have the lowest mintage, 774,874, of any of the sets that include the Silver Quarter Proof sets. Seems like a reasonable price to me, especially when you see what the 1999 & 2001 Silver proofs (with higher minatge figures) are selling for and those sets do not include a proof president set.

You can't really compare the 2008 Silver Proof Set to the 1999 Silver Proof Set. 1999 was the first year of the SQ Program and the SQ Program drew millions of new collectors into the hobby. Unfortunately, many got started a little too late to be able to acquire that 1999 set through the Mint and were forced to seek them in the secondary market which drove the price into the $350-$450 range. The price has dropped a little but still remains fairly high because there are still millions of those new collectors seeking them. In a way, the Prez program and even the ATB program are merely a continuation of that marketing scheme and neither is attracting the huge numbers of new collectors as the SQ program did.

Dave - I am curious about the mintage breakdown. Please post the numbers if you have them. Thanks.

I was actually wondering about the regular 14 piece clad proof set, redbook shows a mintage of 1,405,674 Current Value $90. The Silver 14 piece set shows a mintage of 774,874 with a current value of $60.

    I dont get it?

I have seen those prices dropping on some websites that seem to keep current on prices, telesphere numismatics has the 14 piece clad proof set for 70, I sold one of mine for 86 a couple months ago

one of the reasone it's so expensive because it was the last year for the state quarters. Remember 09 sets are U.S. terrorities not states.

Still is confusing that the silver set would be cheaper to grab than the clad set. Just cant wrap my brain around it, Oh well, guess thats the way things are with collectibles.

I have some two coin sets (Dolly Madison and Yellowstone - both from 1999) that include both the BU & Proof coins. The uncirculated coins have a higher red book value because the mintage of the uncirculated coins were much lower than the proof coins.

If the clad proof sets are valued higher than the proof sets with lower mintage then I would expect that this is probably a clerical mistake in the red book. I would not expect an informed buyer to pay the prices indicated. Just my humble opinion.

The 2007 - 2010+ Silver proofs also include a Presidential Proof Set. The 2009 Proof Sets have six silver quarters vs on five silver quarters in all previous and subsequent years, so that plus a relatively low mintage, I would expect a higher value on this set in future years. I have two sets :>)

The 2008 set has a lot of things going for it. Mintage isn't overly high, last of the Lincoln Memorial cents, last of the State quarters, and the last Sac dollar.
