This is garbage. Go away to the other coin forum where there are no moderators and no one puts you down.
Very few existing members have had more run ins and disagreements with the moderators on this site than me. Heck, my arguments with Doug are epic, and desertgem even banned me once. That said, moderators are certainly necessary on this site. This is one of the most active coin forums and when things get out of hand, it happens quickly. The moderators on this site are all contributing members, as opposed to other sites where they simply moderate the forum as a function of their job and do not get involved in the discussions. Is that what is bothering you?
I think it is unfair to claim that this is a problem solely with older collectors. The younger collectors act in the same way. Also, much of it is meant harmlessly, and I think you are being oversensitive. Why do you take it personally when someone doesn't like one of your coins? It is not like the person attacked you personally. Rather than taking offense when someone summarily concludes that a coin is post mint damage or artificially toned, why don't you inquire as to how the poster reached that conclusion? Wouldn't that be more instructive than complaining about it? You would learn a lot in the process. -Signed someone who is not old enough to run for President (i.e still a baby by coin collecting standards)
No. That's not what bothers me. What does is the "know it all" attitude. No one's opinion counts except for theirs. You can never come out the victor with these kinds of folks. Just once I would like to hear them say "I appreciate your opinion" instead of "You're wrong" Just sayin.
I don't have a tedious boring existence because I know half of what I think I know and can usually throw out 90 percent of the remainder
I would like to see specific examples of what you are referencing. It is possible that I have missed something, but usually there is nothing nefarious about what is posted. Now, going back to your original post, there are some older collectors that think they know more than they do, but again, that is not because of age but a phenomenon that you will see on all message boards regardless of whether it is coin related or not. Some people like to feel important, and being portrayed as an expert (at least in their own mind) makes them feel happy. It is actually sad. The key to being part of any online community is knowing who actually has valuable things to say and who is merely full of hot air. P.S. Also, everyone makes mistakes. With that said, there are also many grey areas in numismatics where there is no one "right" answer in much the same way that two highly qualified physicians can come to drastically differing opinions in medicine on occasion. Moreover, particularly with younger/less experienced collectors, many have not had their coins professionally imaged or have purchased their own photography equipment for good images. (An older or more advanced collector may have acquired skills and equipment through the years or at least know who to hire at reasonable prices to image their coins.). Poor images can also lead to advice that is less on point, but that isn't the fault of the commentator.
Don't worry little bunkie - we will pat you on the head and make you feel better. I have yet to see a newbie give any kind of advice - mostly they ask questions that are gladly answered as long as they don't turn into know it all morons. The saying "Live and learn" and "why did God give you 2 ears but only 1 mouth" is absolutley true. Go ahead and make fun of me if you must but that will only show your true colors.
Little Bunkie- That's a good one. I'm 59yrs old and have been collecting since I was 23. I feel I know a lot about the hobby but, certainly not everything. What I'd like is for everyone to get along and learn from each other about this wonderful hobby of ours.
I was totally sarcastic on this one! I wasn't sure of saying "dead" as I have too many points - just got back from a 7 day "vacation" last month and I don't know why!!
