Not the Rick Moranis one, I like the one with Jonathan Haze and Jack Nickolson in it. Have the TPGs stooped low enough to allow a 70 with a plus, star or CAC bean?
Why do people reject a good looking coin with a light cleaning for half price? Is it the stigma of the slab saying cleaned? That the coin is somehow undesirable, even though it looks nice? Maybe to a modern collector, the dreaded 69 is similar to a "details" slab - there are better coins out there. Therefore, they look at the 69 as undesirable. Why would someone pay 100k for a top pop MS65 Saint, when a 64+ costs less than 10k? Who knows (or cares) what people like and collect.
Wow is there really a case where that exists because I could make a fortune resubmitting those 64+ Saint's till I get a 65, it really won't be that hard to do.
With that attitude, what's the point of CT and other forums? What would we talk about? I'm usually happy with XF 40, 45 AU 50, 53, 55, 58, MS 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, ... I don't discriminate based on appearance, as long as it's not a Details grade.
The sad thing is it is not even real respect. I just look and laugh at the people who just can't live without their name on the list yet can't collect "real" coins to do it. Just my highly biased, offensive opinion.
By real coins, you mean circulation? I noticed you started the topic with comparisons of today's modern mint marvels.
The registry scene has no real appeal to me. I would be surprised if I have spent more than 10 minutes of my life even looking at them. I collect U.S. coins considered classics. 70's in these type of coins are almost non-existent. The only things I buy from the mint are the current silver proof set and one each of the PR and MS bullion pieces. I took some of the money I saved from moderns and put it into U.S. paper currency instead. Mostly 1928 and earlier. I'm still trying to get out from under all my mint products I purchased earlier during my collecting life.
The TPGs don't "allow" CAC to do anything.... I wish you luck with your collection. Anti-TPG, anti-CAC, anti-old school coin dealer, anti-circulated coins will certainly be interesting, its like the bizarro version of my collection. I look forward to seeing your coin images and watching your progress.
Actually I would love to see some of the coins torontokuba has collected I have a feeling some here would be suprised. And were he to post costs I suspect we might even be more impressed. But I'm just guessing here.
I'm not 100% anti-anything. I understand the concept of moderation. I try to pull the trigger when something makes sense, appeals to me and I don't like getting fleeced. You have real issues with reading something and understanding it. Circulated coins are great, love them, I just don't feel the need for a slab or a sticker with those. With all the corporate brands and labels in your collection, I'm wondering if you're more about Coca-Cola on a hot day, or do you just enjoy the bottle? I love the old school coin dealer when he/she displays prices and doesn't pick on me for where I stand, how long I stand there and where I put my stuff. You really need to absorb what you are reading.
I try not to show off too much, but, I do contribute some images. I'm not exposed to the TPG industry at the same level you guys are. Vegas Vic, your coins are in a different league, I understand the concern for fakes and certainty you get when you're paying thousands for a coin, I get the benefits. I also respect the opinion you shared, when pointing out cheaper and nicer alternatives to an AU CAC coin. Shows you're using the old noggin. That's all I'm writing about, CAC stickers for the high end, rare products makes sense. It's like having a second party appraise your valuables. I don't get it on a G4. I choose to buy my worn out examples without the need for TPG or CAC.
Agreed but I've seen some 69's I would love but barber halfs and Morgans like that are beyond my means.
