For a lot of collectors, the thrill is in the hunt. Once the hunt is over, they tend to lose interest. I know a lot of collectors who sell After they have completed a set.

The wildest one I know of was the late Robinson Brown. He was one of the first collectors to assemble a complete set of the large cents by die variety from 1793 to 1857. When he completed his first set, he sold it at auction. I heard that on the day of the auction, he was out buying them again and ultimately put together another set!

I am quite different. I tend to hold on to the coins after I complete a set. Every once and a while I’ll do more research on them or build an exhibit which will have me just as excited about the coins. The great part about studying a set or building an exhibit is that I’m out spending money buying coins.
