Why do we grade bullion?

ASE's do have a face value of $1 and could be spent as such. I do agree that grading them is an academic exercise and is really a tool to increase the perceived"value" of a particular issue year.

Even though I normally only buy rolls of eagles, this year I also snagged 10 ms70 30th anniversary slabs. 2016ms70.JPG

But since you go it for not much more than bullion, why do you think you will be able to sell it for much more than bullion?

    "Why do we Grade Bullion?"

    Because we (they) can.........

I once was in that crowd but after having lost my butt on resales (over the long run)......I left that crowd.

Grading bullion, regardless of the number of big ticket auctions that folks post, will never amount to more than a fools errand in that what you buy today as graded bullion, MS/PR70 or not, is simply going to lose money over the long run.

Big ticket items are based upon populations, not grade. Populations can change with the next submission and I can guarantee you that if a 1995 ASE sold for 5+ grand on Great Collections that there will be 100 coin dealers making bulk submissions on 1995 ASE's to try and achieve the same price. For the 1995, not many have made the mark but historically speaking, that could change at any moment and when it does, the profit margin ends. These are not "rare" with regard to any definition of the word rare and as such, prices will go down. It;s just a question of when.

I would caution any collector that is considering entering the MS/PR70 SAE Market to understand that what they pay is NOT necessarily what they'll get and that if they understand that basic fact, then they are certainly free to do whatever they wish.

Garlicus Debt is dumb, cash is king.

Historical data. Plus, acquiring it at the right time, at the right price, from the right person/entity.

If I overpaid $20 for bullion, I can live with that. I've made other mistakes in life that have cost me a LOT more. Haven't we all?

Shoot, I remember the day when we's was just happy to get a particular date (out of the change [dey didn't have eagles back then]) No regard to condition (although you wanted most of the design to show). Totally uncomplicated, innocent and sober.......

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Why do some people grade bullion?

Because some marketer somewhere figured out that some sucker would pay for it.

    And.... profit.

eeww.. I WOULD BE ONE THEM THE Marketers.. cause I have bought cars and land, homes, and some Bullion and had it appraised then sold it for more than I paid for it.. so that makes me a bad person, four letter word,.... toooo.... Sorry.... I guess...

Once you've seen an ASE, you've seen them all. It's different for silver dollars, somewhat for Ike's, because they were made for circulation and also relatively long ago. But eagles were never meant to circulate, and they are pretty recent. These characteristics make eagles ungradeworthy in my opinion. And pretty toning I only admire in older coins.
