I'm borderline-okay with paypal. It probably get me some customers due to convenience, but combined with ebay fees, I lose $5 on a $25 sale.
Ccgnum,losing US$5 on a US$25 sale is far too much to lose.Have you tried Bidpay? Well,here's a link; www.bidpay.com .
Wasn't this company called something else a year or 2 back? then was bought by somebody, now they are back?? If this is the same company, or if it is similiar is the fact that The buyer pays the fees to pay the seller Doesn't matter if he uses cash, checking or credit card--I will admit tho, that when I did use this option, not 1 winning bidder used it, if you post paypal and bidpay on same item, most all will use paypal cause it does not cost the buyer a red penny in fees of any kind--
Bidpay is great for buyers and sellers both. Buyers who want to charge their purchase to a credit card for protection can use bidpay and sellers who don't accept paypal receive a western union money order in the mail. I've taken this form of payment for a few years now and have only heard of two complaints regarding bidpay. Can't say THAT about paypal, for sure. Nick
Not for this buyer! At charges of $2.75 to $27.45 for purchases of $10-$1,000 purchase, and unavailable if the total of price and S/H is over $1K, it's way too rich for my blood.
So for a $1k purchase the bidpay charge is $27.45? Wow you buyers have it cheap Ebay/paypal fees would devastate a $1k sale. Seriously though, that is a bit higher than I thought bidpay would be. But I still think ANYTHING but paypal is better. Nick
Hmmmm - 2.75% in fees. Doesn't seem that unreasonable to me. Kinda funny though - that's the same percentage the credit card companies charge the vendors who accept credit cards. Geee - do ya think they (BidPay) planned it that way ? Of course they did. They are providing the service for you and charging you the same amount they are charged by YOUR credit card company. And what do you get out of it for that 2.75% in fees ? Well you don't have to leave your home to go buy a Money Order. You don't have to buy the stamp or the envelope to mail the Money Order. You don't have to go to the Post Office or mail box to mail it. And you get the protection of using your credit card. Also - many sellers are willing to ship once they receive notification from BidPay that you the buyer have purchased the Money Order. This means you wait approx 1 week less for your coin to arrive. Sure sounds like a plan to me
I personally would never pay with Bidpay or money order for an auction. If the seller does not ship, you have no recourse. You can not intiate a chargeback because the credit card company considers the transaction between you and Bidpay not the seller. Bidpay also no longer takes Mastercard, that leaves alot of people out.
I send checks all the time when I purchase stuff on ebay. I check the sellers return policy, feedback (I read the comments, not just glance at the number) and if I feel comfortable with how they do business I place my bid/make my purchase. I've been buying and selling on ebay for...wow 10 years as of this year, and I've never been ripped off by a seller. If the seller is new, has poor feedback and no posted return policy, then I'll probably pass, although I might send an email with my concerns or questions. Legitimate sellers WANT to hear questions and are happy to answer emails...many have their phone number right on the auction page.
You might send the seller an email and just ask if they will take Paypal even though they say they won't. I was traveling for business when I won a bid and just did not have time to get a money order so I emailed and asked. He said no problem. The only thing he stipulated was that my primary source in Paypal had to my checking account and not a credit card. I am not sure why but maybe they do not pay extra fees in this case.
For What its worth I will not use Paypal for ANY transaction what-so-ever. When they asked for me to supply my checking account number at signup beside my credit card I decided that this was a bad deal. They didn't have a need to know that much information. There are a lot of security problems out there and I don't what to have to deal with them. If a seller doesn't take a check or Money Order I don't bid. I have always had another coin come around the cornor. I don't want the banks or Paypay tracking my purchases and keeping records of what I buy. It may show that I won an auction but it never shows if it was me or someone else who paid for it. Paypal can go away and I would never miss it. catman
I like Paypal as a buyer, but found when selling a couple items that they charged outrages fees for the once in awhile seller.
As you can see there are some very legitimate reasons a seller might avoid accepting PP. I interspersed my answers with your questions. I bolded my responses, I hope it isn't too confusing to read. CJD
Can a seller that uses PP alot tell me why some say, "Will except payment if it is from bank account to bank account, they will NOT except PP "credit card" payments--Are there lower fees involved if it is cash point to point?? I need a clarification bout that-- The few time I have been paid via PP, I was not able to see, or determine the source?? And was always charged the 2.9%--And like CDJ posted in the response in front of this one, in each case after I got hit with that fee, I lost, money on all the deals that were paid via PP, I had NO margins-- Rather upset me some, so much so, I have not tried to sell on ebay since then--Why sell if I know I'm going to lose money. If I could at least come out even, ---but heck--if you lived of ebay, if you break even you will go hungry--you at least have to eat & pay rent no?? a small profit of a few pennies would be nice--
i will try and explain this as I have used both methods of payment, i.e: from a bank account and also a credit card, to pay fees on PayPal. If I am allowed or required to use ONLY a "verified" bank account to pay the fee, there is no additional charge passed on to the seller. If I am allowed to use a credit card to pay the fee, then the charge my crredit card makes to PayPal is added to the fee they charge for doing buisness with the seller. A much more costly method. I will say this sa a eBay customer and a PayPal user... PayPal tries to convince the buyer to use a verified bank account to pay with, as more sellers will accept payment with this type of arrangement. Hope this helps.
There are 3 (main) types of PP accounts. 1) Personal Account, 2) Premier Acct, & 3) Business Acct. (I think this is what it is called) The differences are acct type 1 can only accept payments from PP balances and bank accts and are charged only the 30¢ PP fee. type 2 accts can accept any type of payment and are charged 30¢ per transaction + 2.9% of the transaction (actually I think the % changes on larger transfers, But I don't know all those specifics), Acct type 3 can also accept any payment method, but they are charge their PP fees on a scale that benefeits people who do massive amounts of selling. (not me so I don't know all the specifics here either.) So... If you try to pay someone with a credit card and all they have is a "personal PP acct" then PP will ask them if they want to accept or deny the payment. (this is where PP SCREWS sellers) If that seller chooses to accept the payment, then their account is automatically upgraded to a "premiere acct" so that it can accept credit card payments. As a side effect of the upgrade ALL payments received from that point on will be charged the 2.9% (regardless of the origin of the subsequent payments). Anyone who only accepts the bank transfers and PP balance transfers is trying to keep from being charged the outrageous PP fees. Hope this helps some. CJD
Hey guys, when did the new math decree that $2.75 on a $10 purchase is 2.75%? When I was in elementary school back in the '30s, that worked out to 27.5%! Bidpay is hugely excessive on small dollar purchases, and those of us compiling full date sets buy a lot of inexpensive coins.
Excellent response CJD, I now understand much better, thank you--Thats exactly what happened to me BTW, I had a regular verified account mainly to use to pay for things I won. Then I decided to sell off some silver and sacs etc, I then excepted payment from a few winning bidders then walla--premier account status automatically, at the time I didn't think much about it, I thought they made a mistake, I figured then, what the heck, premier is better than standard, well now today I finally learned what, who and why--BTW, this happened way before ebay bought out PP, so it was & looks like SOP for them to this day-- If a seller goes cash all the way and only pay .30, well now I would do the same thing--Cash always rules--The thing is with me, most of the big ticket items I purchased was paid via CC, there is the problem for some I guess-- PS: your response also helped OLDMAN, thanks--
Just logged off Bidpay, I did have an account set up with them also that I made years ago, I just never used them, I did it for the convenience of the buyer, which BTW, no one ever used if I also posted the PP logo--Any ways attached is there fee schedule which apparently has changed: $10 and under flat rate of $1.95 >>>>>>>19.5%---Using the high number, 1.95/10 $10.01 to $30 flat rate of $2.95 ......9.8% $30.01 to $50 flat rate of $3.95 ......7.9% $50.01 to $100 flat rate of $4.95 ......4.9% $100.01 to $1,000 .....$22.50+.00495% 2.25% + $4.95 (Hope my math is correct)>>>>> Standard first class mail is included for free via snail mail--2nd day delivery is availiable for $8-Finally, they also have added another option for the seller whereas they will direct deposit your bank/checking account directly in 3 days--
DOH! sorry for misquoting you. I didn't do the math myself, I just looked at what the previous poster had stated. I guess I got what I deserved for assuming... You must have gone to school back when answers were right or wrong, since then the correctness of an answer has ceased to be as important as the child feeling that everything is ok and everyone likes him/her since s/he is "smart". lol
