The seller is a jeweler and he speaks in terms he is familiar with - karats, not fineness. I'm not gonna rake him over the coals for that. But that is one hidiously ugly coin. Whoever painted it should be shot!
And notice the word 'COPY' stamped on the reverse. Maybe that's why the seller will provide pics of the reverse on request. This fake can be purchased for $19.95. The painted version is only $380 more. The painter must be union.
The fake is a half eagle, the painted one is a quarter eagle. Has anyone considered that the painted piece might be one of those middle east counterfeits that were so common back in the 1950's - 70's. If so it's just a bullion piece and they were commonly used in jewelry or painted like that because it was a way to use the fake other than just melting it down. Even if it was real it didn't have much in the way of numismatic value anyway. Common date and it has some heavy scratches in the field in front of the face on the obv. This coin wasn't worth much more than bullion anyway.
I would have to think it's a REPLICA nobody in there right mind would paint a gold piece I don;t care how demented the person was. I think it's just common sence to me why some body would do that on a real coin especially a gold at that I go for the REPLICA coin PROBABILITY JAZZCOINS jOE
Back when the value of gold was the same as the coin there wouldn't be much stopping a person from doing something like that. That said, it is a shame though, if it's real it's just bullion now, which isn't all bad I suppose.
I bet the people that :hammer:escaped from an insane asylum was the culprit for all those coins :rolling: Jazzcoins Joe
