Why Buy US Mint Boxes

I see quite a few empty US Mint boxes for sale on eBay for, say, AGE unc and proof coins. And some are selling for up to about $35. Why are people buying the boxes? Is it for legit purposes or possibly to deceive buyers with ordinary bullion coins?

Some folks don't care about mint packaging others do. I see a lot of dealers selling the packaging because they can make a few bucks off it after they send the coins in to be graded. Then the people who don't want the hassle of sending coins in to be graded can just buy an MS/PF70 coin, buy the mint packaging and be all set. I have been looking for a $10 unc. gold buffalo box myself actually... Speaking of which I have seem some of those go for stupid money like a few hundred dollars...

If people buy them to try and decieve buyers into thinking they are getting somthing they are not then that is really the buyers fault for buying boxes and not coins...

So they could do this...... The first two $50 pieces are the 2006 and 2007 which came in blue boxes. I removed them and bought two 2009 wooden boxes so I could keep them all looking the same. I then sold the two blue boxes for about $6 each on ebay.

I think your best bet would be to search ebay if you want to get a box and COA of the same year as her eagle. Or if you don't care about the specific date and COA you can just order one from APMEX...

DANG! I must say I missed the Buffalo boat but have at great expense acquired a $5 and $10 UNC so I am jealous to say the least!

The thread got a little off track, but other than the couple of examples posted of use of Mint boxes, there must be other uses too that I'm not seeing. There seem to be too many unc and proof boxes being sold. People who have bought unc and proof coins already have boxes. Maybe some people are splitting up sets into individual boxes, or vice versa. Would that make any sense? Or maybe ordinary bullion coin owners just want to impress their friends?

Some people are only interested in collecting the coins. Some people are only interested in collecting coins along with the original packaging. Both are legitimates ways to collect. Neither is better.

I bought one!! I just bought it a few days ago on ebay and I haven't rec'd it yet. I paid almost $20 bucks for it total. I plan to use it for my 1986 Liberty Gold coin proof and I bet with the presentation box it will kick up the price at least $20. That's the reason I got it for but I'm not even selling yet. The box I bought was going for above $30 easy!! My experience is that a gold coin in a US Mint box looks alot better than a gold coin in an airtite!! mo money, mo money!! :D

I know in the past I have had a situation where either I have gotten clumsy and damaged the mint packaging for certain coins or I have received a coin with less than perfect mint packaging and felt it should be replaced. There are a variety of reasons why someone would be looking for this sort of thing, rather than trying to deceive someone else down the road.

I received my box today, my total was $18.45 and it was a steal of a deal! If I wanted to, this box could easily increase the price of one of my coins a minimum of $50 but this box is sOOO nice. Heck, now I know why ppl pay so much for these boxes! It's a beautiful box!!!!! These are the sellers pics, before I got the box I didn't know that it would be so nice! It's truly a keepsake all by itself! :D

Yeah the UHR box is REALLY nice. I was very impressed when I got mine as it was the first gold product I had purchased from the mint. Even if it didn't add value it helps make for a great presentation peice. Plus with gold moving the way it has been you have already paid for the box!

Now that's a NICE box. Heck, if the price of gold ever tanks, you've got a nice valuable piece of wood there. When you consider, wood may become a more valuable commodity that gold if we keep using it up the way we're doing.

When I sent my UHR coin in for First Strike grading, I had to pay extra for PCGS to return the box. If you didn't pay the extra charge up front, they wouldn't return it. I imagine some collectors didn't realize it until it was too late. PCGS did not save them afterward. I'm sure several people had to re-purchased another box to own the complete Mint package.
