Here's the thing, Eddie. This current wave of toning appreciation has spawned an attitude that I think is dangerous - that ALL color is GOOD color, and while that may be some newb's deal, it is NOT going to ever serve him well at the end. Not all color is good color and we need to have the cajones to stand up straight and yell that as loudly as we can. It's a public service.
Lehigh, let's be brutally honest, okay? You have an axe to grind with GSC, as do many other web-based dealers. Fine. We get it. Many many collectors have nothing but great things to say about GSC, and I think you need to be careful about denigrating them. I bet they outsell you by quite a bit.
Well Kurt all well and good here an item they sold with no disclosure of issues . ...nicely struck buffalo , nice color, nice detailed coin.
Zackly! Like it? I do, except what's that thingy on the rim by the "F"? I either gotz to know, or I ain't biddin'.
I guess that makes sense from the standpoint of his basically relating that he thought he had a winner collectors would appreciate. Ah, but "tarnish" (...hey, when the word fits, lol) the thought.
Why would you think I have an axe to grind with GSC? I just don't like their business model which is to use photographic magic to hide problems and sell those coins as problem free to the "many many" unsuspecting collectors. Weren't you the one earlier in this thread who was talking about ethics? And of course they outsell me, I'm not a professional coin dealer.
At Kurt they may be different than the coins you had in your hands. BUUTTT, And though, being a different age of coins/time. It is still coinage, and worth the time. Beyond judgement. GCS may be a controversial company. And, I haven't seen a good sale from them, on this site? I have a dealer, sells mostly details coins. Get, real pissed cause I miss it at his shop, and I find it when I go to take a photo.
I've bought maybe 8-10 coins from GSC, perhaps a few more, less than 20 for sure, and I have NEVER been unhappy with any of them. All have straight graded by NGC, and all at higher grades than I would have guessed from the EBay picture. But I do ACTIVELY examine online pics with changing the brightness on my monitor manually. That may be the difference. It's an old habit.
Why would I think you have an axe to grind??? Well, for starters, you never miss an opportunity to rag on them, kinda like "Books" has to rag on Daniel Carr.
Maybe it is because everytime a newbie shows up and posts a coin from GSC that they are interested in buying, I see a potential problem coin. Go ahead, buy that Stone Mountain, see if I'm right. Or maybe you are feeling self conscious about the fact that you still buy coins from them whilst more experienced collectors warn people away from them. Maybe you should ask Doug what he thinks of GSC.
I don't have an ax to grind Kurt, I don't even have an ax. But i think what Carr does is wrong and GSC is definitely not a dealer I would ever buy a coin from. Their manipulation of images is well known and has been for years.
I didn't intentionally leave you out of the Carr raggers club (nor the GSC raggers club). You can have your card and take mine, too, 'cuz I'm never going to need or want it.
Or maybe I know how to grade and know how to look at pictures, huh? By the way, I DO own an axe but have never yet needed to grind it. The sickle? Yes, but not the axe.
I saw it. But did ya ever think about how many people there are who don't have your skills ? What about them Kurt ?
So now you claim to be able to grade coins from photographs, specifically, deceptive photos designed to hide flaws? Can you prove it? Pick a coin from GSC, grade it from the photos, but it & have it graded and see if you are right.
If that's the case, then you will have no problem giving me odds when we finalize our bet on the issue, right?
