on NWT Mint's online store they currently are selling NWTM Silver bars or rounds, or Pan Am Bars or rounds for $40.89 each. Their 5oz and 10oz bars of either brand come out to the same premium. BUT They sell sheets of 10 bars (either brand) for $397.10, which comes out to $39.71 per 1 oz bar. Or you can get a tube of 20 rounds for $794.20 which comes out to 39.71 also. So its a dollar cheaper to get a sealed sheet of 10 1oz bars than to buy a 10oz bar or 2 5oz bars. Anyone know why this is? They usually have this same situation everytime i check In my oppinion I would rather have 1 oz bars anyway.. why would people pay more for 10 oz bars. Im guessing just for storage purposes. Also apmex is selling these same Pan Am sealed bars for almost $10 over spot. Any idea why? I am looking to possibly add about $250 - $400 to my stack. And my local coin shop is only open on weekends and has been low on generic bars lately.
That was my understanding too. Buying in larger size bars usually nets you a marginal decrease in price per oz. Not substantial for a few bars but when you buy a lot it makes a difference when silver shoots back up again.
IMO,buying from NWTM was your first mistake. It dosen't make sense to me either; if you buy ,say , 20 1 oz bars, the dealer usually gives a discount. But if you buy 1 20 oz bar, it costs more than the normal price of a 1 oz bar*20. But at the same time, the dealer will pay you more for your 20 oz bar than for your 20 1 oz bars(most of the time). I would just get 20 I oz bars in the end though.
I have followed NWTM's web site for a few years since that's who I purchased from initially. It used to be that the larger the size the lesser the premium per oz, but more recently the bars (even the 100 oz) have had a higher premium than rolls or sheets on the web site. However, if you phone them for bulk orders you will receive a nice discount from the web prices (bank wire transfer required). I don't know whether that would negate the differential between bars and sheets/rolls, but I would guess that is likely the case.
I have never bought from any online store yet, but have been shopping around and keeping my finger on the trigger. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to buy the high minimums from their general bullion website. I would have to buy from their online store. I know apmex currently has a 24 hour sale on sunshine rounds for $.99 over spot any quantity, and a 3 day sale (I think) on APMEX brand 1 oz and 10 oz bars for $1.49 over spot any quantity.
If you can get to a local coin shop or show, you might be surprised to find that you can purchase bars and rounds at or slightly below spot from certain dealers.
will take a look thanks, My local coin shop usually sells generic 1oz for $1.00 over, and $1.50 for 5oz when he has them.
