Why are 1982, 1983, and 1986 Washington Quarters worth so much?

    I have a 1983 P quarter, a 1986 D quarter and a 1985 D quarter.

    Unfortunately, the answer is most collectors find these coins dull, boring and ugly. Many of them were poorly made, and the designs were trite and had been in place for decades. I remember when the last silver coin went out the Proof sets in 1971. That set was dull so dull and ugly, I almost didn't keep one, but I wanted to maintain the date set.

    Things got better with the Bicentennial sets in 1975-6. After that there were dollar coins and the Mint started to make all of their Proof coins with the cameo finish.

    1927 standing liberty quarter where they are mistaking the designers initial M for a mintmark. Similar to how some newbies will mistake the AW monogram on mercury dimes as a W mintmark.
