History is history, but discussion of that history is Political, which is not allowed, There have been infractions and removals already, anymore posted will have infractions, so stop. Thank you.

Call me old fashioned, but I think Liberty is a GREAT American icon. Plus that allows you to have a beautiful woman on the obverse.

For the reverse, heck, if it's supposed to have an eagle on it, and we're going with iconic American items, why not an eagle sitting on the Golden Arches.

And what was so offensive about the @scottishmoney post? While not flattering to the mentioned individuals (to say the least), hasn't history been bleached/revised enough, especially in more recent times? Apparently it's okay to echo the accepted yet equally whitewashed narrative of Lincoln and others, but a big no-no to even mention their personal shortcomings or failings?

Those bad boys in trouble again Jim?

George Rodgers Clark...Savior of the west during the American Revolution. His victory's at Kaskaskia and Vincennes assured the infant nation a future on the world platform.

You forgot to remove a quote of my deleted post. Santinidollar quoted it in Post #39.

Really? Post #26 stays but my dissent to it goes? Wow. This is why Jim and I will NEVER see eye to eye. Jim and I seem forever bound to be antagonists.

Well obviously you can have political agendas and sympathies when you are an admin. My post was merely a discussion of facts regarding von Braun and Edison, not political. But someone had a cow

And we both know who, not to repeat myself gratuitously. Suffice it to say I am NOT A FAN of a particular admin.

This whole discussion cannot take place without some intrusion of politics. It is perfectly natural that some people's icons will be politicians. Unless the political opinions of such icons are deliberately pushed beyond general discussion it seems reasonable to allow them. However, it would probably have been more reasonable to have this posted under General Discussion rather than US Coins.

Okay, the quote of @lordmarcovan's post gives me a peek into what can get removed as "political"... and it's pretty baffling, I must say.

I know, right? It's not ours to question. Admins are above reproach, by site policy. "[blah blah blah], [blah blah] corrupts absolutely."

If "history is history", why do you wish to censor only part of it?

With all due respect, it's equally and undeniably political to allow accepted or fluffy feel-good and/or revisionist "history" while silencing reality or certain unpleasant aspects of the individual in question.

  14. I'd go with John Glenn. First American to orbit the Earth and oldest american to go into space...His likeness on the obverse and a rocket soaring into space for the reverse..If that ain't good enough , not much is.

General Discussion has the same rules as any other forum. There are Political, Religion, and world events forum all over the internet for such. Yes, perhaps I should just have removed the complete thread, it would have been easier, but I tried to respect the original concept. If the administrators had deemed that "some" political opinions " was what they wanted, I am sure they would have worded the rules differently.

I certainly did not see anything objectionable in my deleted discussion, or I wouldn't have posted it in the first place, obviously. The "politics" of WW1 was a century ago, after all.

But I will not second-guess @desertgem's decision to remove it. The line between history and politics is blurry. I suspect there's really little difference between the two except for the passage of time. Today's politics is tomorrow's history. Add a century of hindsight to an issue, and by the time everyone who participated in an event or era has died off, it shouldn't be quite as contentious. But yes, sometimes it still is.

I definitely was not trying to stir any pots by discussing the dark side of some important (if mostly-forgotten) historical figures, but if this isn't the time or place for that, so be it. I can understand that. Let the ghosts fade back into the mists of time.

And while I've had posts deleted before (never thought of myself as controversial - haha), I think it's mostly a good thing that this is a tightly-moderated forum, so no worries or laments from me on that score.

    Onward.

Great choices all, and I've learned quite a bit about some of our nation's past heroes already, as well as being introduced to a few I was never even aware had made such a great impact on this country. I'm gonna further research a few names mentioned as their contributions sound faacinating.
This thread probably could have gone under a few different forums (general, coin chat) , I ended up going with US coins because the question is in regards to a theoretical US coin, if an admin feels it should be moved elsewhere that's fine by me.

As a bit of an explanation regarding what gets edited and/or removed - sometimes, stress sometimes, it's not so much what you say as it is how you say it.

Now I imagine some will understand that and others won't - not much I can do about that.
