The Julia Maesa IVNO denarius with the die clash I won at Agora's 12/20/2016 auction arrived today! Just waiting on a package from England from Roma.
Some tets from @Brian Bucklan arrived today. Still waiting on another Egypt lady tet and a roman republic.
I just ordered these from NumisCorner. A dupondius and sestertius of Lucius Verus. They both look like nice coins by my newbie eye.
Now: 4 RR Denarii from friends, 2 Quinarii from Roma auction. Cool. Received in several others last week.
I'm currently waiting on this Roman Republic uncia that I won at Roma earlier. It's a beautiful coin in its own right and a very interesting variant that I'll describe in my writeup when it comes in and I've had a bit more time to study the series...
My two coins have arrived but they are not ancients. A U.S and a German states coin bought from Ebay-U.S. Both relatively scarce. I am happy, also because neither of them went through customs which would have added an additional 19% to the price.
Yah, I hate ordering from Germany (my coins always get dinged at the Canadian border) ... weird, eh? (always the ones from Germany!) => oh, and sadly, my "Bigfoot" coin was from a German dude (oh well, I'm payin' for that baby to get through the border!!)
Steve, sorry to hear that. What is the import duty in Canada for ancient coinage? Here we pay 19 % if silver or gold, and 7 % for copper/bronze if the coin is older than a certain number of years. To make the experience even more enjoyable for the taxpayer, German Customs has a habit of sitting on your coin for up to 4 weeks before they tell you you have 7 days or so to pick it up...or it goes back to the sender!
Gah!! I've been waiting for over a month for post from Istanbul. Actually it's not a coin, it's a note.
Anxiously awaiting a book, not a coin. Nearly a decade in the making, this book is something I've looked forward to for nearly as long. And apparently ancient coins figure into Mason's analysis of the War.
I'm not exactly sure how it works, but I found a bunch of examples where I was dinged by Fed-Ex (all of them were from G-N, Gitbud & Naumann) Twice I was dinged $28 for a $150 purchase => 19% Twice I was dinged $23 for a $150 purchase => 15% Twice I was dinged $40 for coins hovering between $330 to $336 => 15% Once I was dinged $70 for a $500 purchase => 14% ... all of those were silver and bronze
Fedex is notorious for charging customs, I've heard so many stories of people paying high custom charges for collectibles in Canada, not just coins. Not sure if Royal Mail would charge but I'm not sure if auction houses are willing to go through that route.
Interesting that in your part of the world it is the carrier (FedEx) which bills the customs duty. They probably do that on behalf of the Customs Office? Here the package goes to the customs office first. They notify to please come by and pick up your package and bring some money. I have to drive 45 km to the customs office nearest me.
Again, I'm not too sure what happens at our shady border-crossing, but Fedex and Germany are the combination that makes me pay to rescue my poor refugee-coins!!
I've never been charged for coins from any other country, other than the USA (but for whatever reason I got tagged for one of my CNG deliveries ... totally random) ... it's just seems a bit odd that Fedex + Germany = $orrow Honestly, it stops me from ordering from that fine country (oh, but obviously I was gonna be paying through the eye-teeth for that amazing Laodikian beauty!!) ooops ... I guess it's payin' through the nostrils => give one's eye-teeth is a different idiom, eh?
