My point was more, of all the places to move the ANA, we move it 5 miles up the road from Long Beach. Makes little sense. Sure it's great for all you California bubble folks. If the regular shows like Long Beach and Baltimore don't count in my argument then the Cenral States doesn't count in yours, right? Tell me when was the last time a large national coin show was in KC, St Louis, Detroit, or Indianapolis?
The ANA shows are supposed to rotate through the country since it is a national organization. I think of some your cities were brought up and Greg Lyon responded to them in threads on the CU boards. Always the same issues: venue, airport, hotels. And then you need a city that wants an ANA and frankly ANA shows are not super wanted. The concessions and attendance is just not big enough for many venues to care.
Again the ANA does not sponsor the Long Beach show so the ANA isn't "moving" anything up the road. That would be like saying not to have a show in Florida because of the FUN coin show. You also have to take into account that the ANA needs to have shows where dealers & the public want to attend. It could be that there isn't as much interest in the cities you mentioned Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'll be at table 633 Wednesday through part of Friday. Stop by and say "Hi." Looking at the floor map, is it my imagination, or does it not seem as big as it has been for the FUN show and previous summer ANA shows?
The main demographic for the ANA is a bunch of old white guys. And, most of them stay indoors and are at hotels connected to the convention center so they don't have to leave the site. Let's not fool ourselves that coin shows, even the ANA, are some sort of draw for lots of family vacations. For the record, there has not been a summer ANA show in Florida since 1992. So, yes, it does seem that the ANA thinks Florida has its bases covered with the FUN shows. I understand the show is supposed to move around, and I didn't care for it being in Chicago so many years in a row either. My point was that I feel the ANA takes the lazy and easy way out, and has particularly become lazy seeking out different venues. Minneapolis hasn't had an ANA in 80 years (1936 was the last). Now that we have a stupid bullion law here in Minnesota, it will likely never come back -- but why didn't it come back in the 70 years it could have? Omaha would be another good location -- they hosted in 1955, nothing since. Kansas City has never had a summer ANA. St. Louis last had one in 1979. You get the drift here -- and "nice weather" isn't a very valid reason to have a show in California in the summer. The weather is largely nice everywhere in the USA in August -- at least we've never had snow here in Minnesota in August in the ~15 years I've lived here. In the end, it is what it is. I'll just bid on any auction items via the internet. What I'm missing on the bourse I will not know -- but it seems the ANA has cared more about what dealers want than what collectors and ANA members want for a while now. Yet another "wholesale dealer coin swap meet".
I'm passing on this one, the travel time is too much, one day lost there, and one day lost back, so only 2 days with 4 used.
ANA goes where they believe collectors want to go, period. Only one thing disqualifies a state - sales tax on coins. They plan about 4 years out. 2017 is Denver. 2018 is Philly. 2019 is Chicago. 2020 is due for discussion. The March shows are mostly southern, with Pittsburgh thrown in just to screw with us for 2019. 2017 is Orlando. 2018 is Irving, TX. I'm going for the whole ANA Anaheim show. Flying from Philly to John Wayne/Orange County airport for only about $159 each person. (Southwest - book early and watch for sales.) I flew to Dallas in March for $59 each way. I arrive Monday the 8th at 12:45PM. Leaving Anaheim Saturday the 13th at 6:00PM, heading to Burbank for the night. Leaving LA Sunday night for a 48 hour Amtrak trip to New Orleans where I will be meeting up with @Santinidollar and @Kirkuleez for fun and frivolity. Anyone else who wants to come along and can be in NOLA on August 17, you're welcome. Let me know and I'll include you on our NOLA PM conversation. I gots no spousal unit (two exes, one adult son who is travelling with me), and this is my big vacation - working as a National Volunteer for my beloved American Numismatic Association. I'll be doing it until I physically can't any more. Then I think I'll assume ambient temperature. I genuinely love the staff of the ANA. They are great people who love us, the hobbyists. Thank them, and give them advice as to what you want. It does happen. Look me up in Anaheim. I can be found at the Message Center (announcements over the P.A. system) or near registration every day unless I'm snapping pics for The Numismatist. Ask for Kurt or Bellman or anything else descriptive you like. I answer to some really insulting stuff. Come. We drink. We laugh. We take sustenence. Party time, dudes! It's ANA time! Most of my bourse purchases will be "dumb stuff", really odd low ticket stuff I need for an exhibit. ANA bourse prices for serious material get a little starchy for my tastes. My Anaheim evening agenda: Monday night - open Tuesday night - 125th Anniversary reception Wed. night - Disneyland Thurs. night - Numismatic Literary Guild Bash Fri. night - Banquet and Silent Auction Sat. night - lick wounds from getting my butt kicked for my exhibit, skulk away to Burbank
You're right about one thing - while MN's legislature is the way it is, ANA will never have a show in MN. Sales tax or other heinous regulation is a non-starter. But here are some non-Chicago midwest years just during my lifetime, and I'm not even counting Pittsburgh, which may or may not be midwest to you: Milwaukee - 2007, 1986 Denver - 2017, 2006, 1996 Detroit - 1994, 1984, 1962 Cincinnati - 1988, 1980 St. Louis - 1979, 1970 Yes, Chicago is overexposed somewhat, but one of the BIGGEST determinants of convention sites is a highly ACTIVE (note: not "wealthy", ACTIVE!) set of coin clubs from which to recruit local volunteers for the host committee. Nobody tops the Chicago Coin Club in that regard, NOBODY! Other than Chicago, people want the coasts most years. I haven't missed a summer or winter ANA in quite a few years, and yes, families do attend! I dressed up as a pirate for Treasure Trivia at the winter ANA in Atlanta a couple of years back for the kids, who were a hoot. This year's is across the street from DISNEYLAND, for crying out loud. Want the ANA to come to a town? Ask for it. But you better have the volunteer base, not just collectors, to support it. Here's another rub: many cities' Convention Bureaus don't WANT the ANA convention because it's too small. I'm darned excited to be coming to Anaheim, and so is my 21-year-old son. A convention is what YOU make it. Don't like the way ANA makes decisions? Get involved personally. That's what I did.
