"Which slabbing company is the most accurate in grading and brings the biggest premium" I would argue that NGC is the most accurate and PCGS brings the biggest premium.
What is it about this topic. The last time someone brought it up and I finformed them that it was just recently discussed with a poll attached, a very similar argument broke out. Hunt (& Evorlor), you guys can get mad at Krispy and Chris all you want but they are right. You are asking two different questions and want people to answer in one poll. That is impossible. I voted PCGS. IMO, NGC is marginally more consistent but PCGS definitely brings higher prices. We won't discuss the reasons for such premiums as that is a whole other topic and would require it's own thread. What I can tell you is that not much is going to change in a year. If you want to know how Cointalk members feel about the big two TPG's, this thread will answer your question. NGC vs PCGS I couldn't find the other thread in which I responded the same way Krispy did to your post and I was greeted with a buzz off attitude, people may have changed their minds. BTW, my best threads are much longer than one paragraph. Since you don't read them, you are missing out on my biggest contributions to this forum. I consider that your loss, not mine.
Kids... jeeze. When I was 15-16, I was out causing trouble all night and staying up 3-4 days in a row for the hell of it during the summer. BTW Hunt, I really hope you break out of that laziness before it's too late... Just trust me, the lessons I've learned are very painful now when my friends are buying houses, getting engaged, and I'm just barely scraping by because I never bothered to give 100%.
Agree with Paul and Leadfoot and Chris. Don't understand why someone who doesn't like to read would bother being here in the first place -- this is a hobby where you better learn to read or you'll get trampled. Anyway, my answers, limited to Buffalos and Walkers (what I know): Greatest premium: PCGS. But it's not as straightforward as you might think because on the average NGC grades a bit higher than PCGS so a PCGS MS66 Walker should on average bring a higher price than an NGC MS66. Most consistent: PCGS and NGC grade differently but I wouldn't say either is more consistent than the other. I think they both do a good job but suffer from the inherent problem of gradeflation.
I do not like Kool-Aid. When I was a kid, I had to drink it the entire summer. Cherry, Grape...with 2 scoops of sugar...now I drink water.
x2. i actually enjoy all the reading i do at this place. i agree with what you said a few posts back. i never listened when the adults would say "don't be lazy and screw up" or "you will regret this in a few years". and i really do regret my laziness when i was younger. i lucked out with a few things and worked very hard, but could have been doing so much better by now.
I wish you two guys luck not liking to read and being lazy together. Maybe you guys can become coin dealers together, how does $0 in sales sound? Seriously, Hunt, instead of taking less than two minutes to make a thread, and making grammatically incorrect post, you can spend your time doing research, I search the forums ALL THE TIME, and find the information I need most of the time, if not, I'll personally ask somebody or start a thread myself, which is long and well thought and is very clear.
They were at one time. They are under different ownership now and when they were sold, their grading quality took a dive.
Yes. You asked two different questions - "Which is more accurate ?" and "Which brings bigger premium ?" That indicates you feel the two are tightly coupled. They aren't. Yes. The question "Which is more accurate ?" is very broad with no simple answer. I personally feel PCGS is much tougher in certain areas, namely : awarding CAM or DCAM to proofs, particularly 19th century / early 20th awarding really high grades (MS66 and above) Questionable Color early US coinage, particularly gold In grading early US material, all companies handle problems inconsistently. Since so many early US coins have problems of some sort (particularly copper), they are in quandary as to where to draw the line. Not surprisingly, they are inconsistent. For instance, there are many Capped Bust Halves which are badly overdipped yet slabbed. Yep. Same here.
The well-worn phrase "buy the coin, not the slab" applies here. There are plenty of accurately graded coins in ANACS slabs, including recent slabs. Since they are widely perceived as inferior, one can often pick up nice coins in ANACS holders at a happy price. If one grades the coin properly, one may then cross ANACS over to PCGS / NGC. Happens all the time. Same with ICG.
I agree. There is a ton of great info on this site but unfortunately sometimes you get posts or threads started by immature individuals who cannot handle constructive criticism and are too lazy to do their own research. It is bad enough to be lazy but to admit it as if it is some kind of badge of honor is just plain ignorant. But hey, Hunt1 is now a self-professed Senior Member after 1.5 months so he is all knowing or at least he thinks he is!
How about they're all as good as the collector who uses their services believes them to be. They all are the same: 1. Inconsistant 2. Opinions only
Not for nothing but why are you continuing to put the OP down? Just let it go already! If you think this thread is pointless, hello, DON'T POST TO IT!
BTW, I voted PCGS because I think NGC and PCGS are about even, but PCGS carries a slight premium. I attribute that to their slabs... far more attractive than NGC's.
"They are all the same" isn't just for TPGs; it's equally applicable, and dangerous, to the collector and dealer community at large. One finds inconsistency in all coin peeps. We aren't perfect.
