The images from the original coin aren't good enough to be conclusive, but I'm seeing differences between the two (particularly placement of the reverse lettering) which really raise a red flag about its' authenticity. Look at STATES OF on the two and see if you see what I do. There are only two die pairs for this coin, differentiated by clearly different mint marks. If the OP coin is authentic, it must match the OP's second linked coin exactly in terms of detail locations and relationships.
Can anybody put the two reverses next to each other over here . Though I'd never buy a coin of that price without seeing it in hand or from a dealer I can trust . I still think it's real .
Real. Open collar struck. Heavily clashed die. Tall 5 variety which is a pretty common coin as far as these go. But it's had the living snot cleaned out of it. Which is why the surfaces look totally wrong. And $4700 is plenty for a details grade coin
They are different as the L lines up to the left of the T on one and more to the center on the other . Do we have a pic of a coin with another reverse die .
The only other reverse die uses a far smaller mint mark. These have to match exactly, if we assume the slabbed coin is authentic.
As far as grading the coin.....the reverse shows a lot of fine line indicating a harsh cleaning. The detail is hard to evaluate..... I'm thinking it would come back Graded AU details harsh cleaning. Retail is 9750 for au55. So 4700 is probably all of its money. I usually buy gold....its very hard to photograph properly. Sometimes it's just hit or miss buying it. If the date is somewhat common you can buy raw coins for between 10 to 20 % over spot. So the just keep bullion value at the worst. However I did get an 1876S half liberty for 20% over spot.... As I remember quite a blurry photo from a non coin dealer..... When I got the coin I estimate it's might grade out as high as ms66. So there are some good bargains to be hunted for.
here's a pic...it's a 1879s half liberty.....I either paid 400 or 450 for it...have another 1879s...back in 2011 when gold was 1500/oz
66 would be max.....I have some slabbed 64, 65, 66 gold coins around the same year......the finish on this coin is a cut above those....almost proof like. Only thing wrong with it is a slight indent around the 8
I'm seeing marks in the left field on the obverse and to the lower left and what looks like a scratch on the reverse.
The coin is still in the plastic holder.....some of that is on the plastic The only marks noticeable with naked eye are the indent on 8 and mark to left of face. Even though a loupe it's quite clear
Well worth sending in. Huge price jump between 64-65 and pcgs has not certified anything higher then 65
I was noticing nothing higher than 65..... Even if I would get a grade of 64... I would be quite happy. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1897-5-Libe...8615198&pid=100033&rk=1&rkt=4&sd=200798009508 This coin got a grade of 65.... I'm thinking my coin is at least as good as this....the strike on my coin is a lot better
