In France, by the way, they pick a new Marianne model every couple of years. Mostly for busts that are used in schools and other public buildings. In my opinion such personifications on coins are kind of outdated, but dead presidents only ... not really an attractive alternative. As for why women are usually picked for such allegorical figures, maybe because the values they represent are (in Latin for example) mostly feminine words: Libertas, Sapientia, etc. Christian
I'd like to nominate Rachel Fox for the next round. She's 17 and has been day trading since she was 15. That suggests to me she has a sense of independence, she wants a future and she's willing to get off her behind and try to make one for herself. Isn't that at least associated to the concept of Liberty-especially in a young invincible? Yes, she would still be a far cry from a real symbol of Liberty-that would be those butt ugly Marines on Mt. Suribachi.
I voted Upton, as that GQ cover shot was one of the best magazines covers I've ever seen. I wish Megan Fox was on the list, my #1 celeb hottie of all time.
I still think this discussion (even if it's not meant to be taken all that seriously) is generally wrong minded. The question can be boiled down to whether the honor of portraying Lady Liberty should be one merited or bestowed? I earlier made the suggestion that it be a female member of our military, but it could just as well be a recent immigrant to this country, who may well have a greater appreciation of our freedoms than many natural born citizens. In any event, should such a choice ever be made, it ought to be one of us, representative of everyday Americans, and not some elite, quasi-royal celebrity.
Jennifer Lawrence has that similar look and just after Hunger Games has that image portrayed in my mind as a Liberty like persona
You may be right. I think we are just having some fun and discussing who would be best among those popular in the celebrity world.
Although I know Silver Bullet Silver Shield is a controversial minter, I think the image on the Freedom Girl round would be a great one for this thread....
I actually had that same passing thought.... See: http://www.cointalk.com/threads/amandas-fun-recap.241494/
See the Barber dime, quarter, and half. Personally I don't think a new Liberty design should be modeled after anyone that is famous or readily recognizable lest the public comes to think that the coin specifically shows that person rather than Liberty. Also as suggested the possible models should only be considered from the shoulders up because most likely that is all that would appear on the coin. What they look like from the shoulders down doesn't matter for a coin.
The one that should have been is striking. https://www.google.com/url?q=http:/...i4oOrw&usg=AFQjCNGovHmyUqBoCFY7ouB8TPIPIDrVdg
I don't know about that. In a modern rendition of Lady Liberty, I can see the mint going with representing her in a three quarters view a la what was done with the Jefferson nickel. That would be striking (which is something of a numismatic pun, I suppose).
