all my family and friends know that collect coins and bank notes, i have them all on the look out for interesting pieces for me.
as few people as possible. for two reasons; one is that i get funny looks when i say to people who are around my age that i collect coins and the other is that people instantly assume because i collect coins i must have a very valuable collection ( which i dont) and i dont want a lot of people to think that as it makes my house a target for theft
The entire family, my friends; some of whom have started collecting because of my influence, the tellers at my bank.
My parents know, my fiancee knows, and 1 close friend. But only the fiancee knows to what extent and what value, the others just think it's neat and don't seem to care much. A few weeks ago I unintentionally revealed that I "dabble" in coins at work: My coworkers and my 1 boss got into a discussion about personal investments. So my boss brings up the fact that he only invests in gold and that it's the best thing out there since bread. So I'm keeping my mouth shut, letting everything go, until he says "...so now that gold's at $2200/oz, I'm cashing in and selling it all" and I couldn't help but jump in and before I knew it, the words "it's actually $1470 this morning" slipped out. Surprisingly, even after telling people that it's because I collect some coins and kind of know my metals, my boss still argued that I'm misinformed, that gold is actually at $2200/oz. Power to ya, buddy, you keep dreaming about that $2200...
The only people that know that I collect is my parents, brother, sister, grandparents and my new boss. I went in for my first interview ever and she asked me what my hobbies were. The first thing I said was collecting coins and she stopped me right there and wanted to know more lol. I got the job and got to talk about coins with my new boss! Maybe while working the register she will let me keep oldies I find.
