Who just picked up a Brutus gold aureus at auction for 2 million? There are only 17 of these known to exist.

Okay, the jig is up, it was me.

I sold off all my beanie babies, sports cards from the 1980s and 1990s & my U.S. Stamp collection from the 1940s - 2023, so I could purchase this handsome bad boy from Rome!

I would be tempted to sell the wife and kids (only joking of course)

I also collected beanie babies when there was a craze for them. But now they are worthless and nobody wants them! :sour:

I bought it so I could crack it out and put in my roll of them. When I get enough of them to complete the roll, I'm gonna deposit them at the bank.

The trouble with $2 million coins is that they take up so much money. I could think of a long list of items I would rather have.

$2 million seems a bit strong for an item with 17 examples known in the Roman series. I thought that only U.S. coins of that rarity could pull that kind of money. I have a few tokens and die varieities in my collection with a similar rarity, but they are not worth anything close to $2 million.

    It's only a 5/5 - 4/5 so I wouldn't have paid more the $1.9 million.

There currently seem to be a # of parties that are seeking to move assets out of currency into "hard assets". Thus a big coin like this is easier to serve than a more larger # of better-valued pieces. It may not be a coin collector at all?

I wonder which country the money originally came from?

Yes non collectors were driving the coin market during the 1979-80 period. They took prices to record levels. When they dropped out, the market fell like a house of cards, and many of them got hurt. Coins became known as rip-offs which led to third party grading and certification.

Sorry, she is nearly as old as me and the boys are probably as old as many of the posters of this forum. But the grandkids are great. The older one, 9 years old, plays guitar and you might suggest he play on a crowded corner with his hat in hand.

Probably one of Putin's rich inner circle;) Its still a crazy price for aureus with 17 known. I have a unique aureus and only paid 7200E:D f6c46f10f395cba89ae4ac4e1cb40af1 (7).jpg

Quite possibly. The CIA should put tracking devices in over-priced artwork & see where they lead? I got out of college in '81 and started trying to buy US type coins that year. Prices were insane and many pieces still are not at those levels even today.

Fortunately I also started seriously into ancients at that same time. Last year I bought a very nice (non-portrait) denarius of Brutus made the same year (42BC). I paid too much for it tho (11K CHF), so am taking a break to rebuild finances.

Nice aureus! I always was & still am a handsome dude. Would you happen to have the auction firm name?

Sadly I didn't have the opportunity to take many of my coins with me when I fled Mediolanum/ Milan, Italy in '68 and eventually retired in Florida.

Why would you leave beautifull Milan! Next door to Germany.
Actually/ I happened on it by chance!
Teutonburger Auctions (like most others) send "unsold" list of coins available at starting prices. I quickly checked their unsold gold/ Lo and behold that beauty caught my eye/ after quick 2 min. research in Calico found it was plate coin/ and ONLY one in existance. I pressed "buy" button after 2 secs.....7200 euros !

Actually I went to their site and they have some interesting items. Unfortunately these are lower-grade silver items. I presume I won't have any conflicting interest with you if I inquire about them?

I note that you've changed your avatar to relect your "new" 1958 Corvette convertible. Very nice car. Your pix doesn't show the grill and I think the '58 was the one with the 4 headlights?

I am going to be a Volvo driver for the forseeable future as S. Florida drivers are very crazy. That makes me non-competitive for single women tho as most other single guys here are buying high-end Lamborgini's, Masserati's, RR's and prestige new cars. I see these things as a waste as they depreciate very sharply.

    Nice thing/ classic US 50s/60s cars appreciate in value. Best/ if you park a 67 427/435HP vette nerxt to a Ferrari/ 99% will pick 67! IMG_2165.JPG

Really nice. Of course the vette is a classic while I imagine many can lease a new Ferrari w/o knowing too much about it.

Of course all of us were expecting it to be gold colored...
