How many of you guys have some Krugerrands? I'm thinking of getting a 1/4 2012 in a few days to get my collection started. They are beautiful coins!
We have one that we inherited. I don't much care for gold, but we'll keep this one because of it's sentimental value. I have known too many people that I don't much care for who were into gold, so whenever I think of gold, I think of them and all their bling-bling. Besides, I'd rather have 60 ASE's than one gold coin. (That being said, I'd trade those 60 ASE's for 60 1 Oz gold coins in a heartbeat. Then I'd sell them all and go out and buy a monster box of ASE's. Anyone want to take me up on that deal? It really is a very good deal!)
maybe the best known gold coin and low premium (in 1oz anyway) so a good buy but I just dont like them. but I'm kinda strange anyway.
somebody is selling an 1oz on ebay that is at £6.50 at the min and has 4 days left on it if you keep an eye on it you could get a very good deal
Krugerrands are a nice coin gold I has 2 roll of 1oz coins 1982 - 1996 but 1/10+1/4 and the 1/2 oz some can be a low mintage date. I known with silver 2010 Mintstage 1/4 oz only 5006 were made. you may want to check out mintage of you coin? this link may help or google Krugerrand mint number by date.:kewl: http://www.krugerrandproof.com/1978-Proof-Krugerrand.html
I have one in an SAGCE slab. The only thing they slabbed were proof Krands. I don't remember what the date was. Only reason I bought it was to get the slab.
When I bought my first gold I was offered the same sale price for either a maple leaf or a Krugerrand. I couldn't get over the color difference in the Krug. It was a lot darker, less goldish for lack of a better explanation.
The difference is the Krugerrand was designed in part to be used for currency. For that reason it has been alloyed with copper to be more durable. It still contains an ounce of gold so the coin itself weights a bit more than this.
I know coins don't carry politics, but I grew up when the Krugerrand had significant "baggage" based upon the government striking them. As such, I simply lost a taste for them. If I wish to buy gold, I buy older circulating coins much like silver.
Years ago, I bought a couple of silver Krugs. After the ASE's I started to collect different silver, 1 ozt. bullion coins. I still collect world silver 1 ozt. coins and even a 10 ozt. coin. I haven't forgotten about the American State Quarter 5 ozt. coins. I've got 5 Bullion, graded, and 5 MS graded coins. But, I still want more world bullion 1 ozt. coins. I like what come out of the Perth mint ,the RC Mint, and many others around the world. This year I bought a Mexican Libertad. I love it. That's why you should collect whever gives you pleasure. It's all there for you to enjoy; so just do it.
There was a very famous, at the time, 1970s Saturday Night Live skit for a fake commercial for the Krugerrand. The video for this skit has disappeared because of the offensive name used for the coin and thus in today's politically correct world is too much for some people to take. This even though the point of the skit was to criticize those who helped finance apartheid by buying the Krugerrand. Of course this was 35 years ago and that government is long gone so it should have no bearing these days as to whether to purchase a Krugerrand.
Not underweight. Under spec: http://www.cointalk.com/t204639/ The problem was (as far as I know) limited to proof coins and not bullion coins. 91.67% gold (22 karat), and 8.33% copper. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krugerrand American Gold Eagles are also 22 karat gold, but include some silver - 91.67% gold (22 karat), 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Gold_Eagle#Specifications
kruggerands are good coins. I actually prefer the alloyed coins for their durability. The .999 fine gold scratches and dents way too easily, which is something that will affect its value. But I generally hold AGEs over krugs though. And yeah, the copper alloy for krugs is what's giving it the more reddish color.
