I was hoping to go that far too. My maternal grandfather was born in Norway so I thought that it would be appropriate to use an 1893 coin from Norway. If I go back far enough most of the 19th century coins will be from Germany.

Good idea. My dad's parents and family were 100% German and my mothers parents and family were 100% Irish. I think I'll stop with my parents and my wife's parents. All born in the USA.

I have never done this sort of thing. My grandmother on my father’s side was the only grandparent I ever knew. She was born in 1883, and was always looking around for coins that bore that date. She got interested in coins along with me and had an accumulation of coins she had set aside over the years. Among her collection was this 1883 dime love token.

She was quite fond of shopping at second hand stores. Perhaps this was one of her finds.

One of her biggest finds with a set of wooden medals from the 1876 Centennial celebration that was held in Philadelphia. I didn't know that she had it until the family broke up her house when she had to go to a nursing home. I asked one of my cousins, who is really into family history if he knew anything about my grandmother's parents attending the Centennial fair. He didn't, so I have to guess that this was one of her second hand store finds. I didn't get a chance to bid on it when her household goods were sold at auction.

For those who don't know what this is, here is an example.

The box lid had a bird's eye view of the fair. The box my grandmother had was far nicer than this one, but you can't be in the right place at the right time for everything.

I did my birth year set, complete proofs and business strikes (MS/PF-65 or -66).
And I gave my Bil and Sil each an MS-65 half dollar of their birth year.
    Wife doesn't want any.
    All parents are gone.
    No children.
    Sister is being ignored.

    That's it.

My ancestry set (on father's side, at least) is a little tougher than most.

My great grandfather (yes, only one great) was born when Washington was President (1796) and died in 1902 when Teddy Roosevelt was President (age 106). He didn't sire my grandfather until 1857 when he was 61 and James Buchanan was President. Then my grandfather didn't die until 1954 during the Truman administration. (97) He didn't sire my father until 1921 at the age of 64. Although Dad was only 31 when I was born his youngest child wasn't born until he was 59. He died in 2014 at the age of 93.

Therefore the men in my family live long lives and father children at very late ages.

I'm 67 and my wife is terrified!;)

That's how I got back into the coin collecting addiction. My family is from Sicily and just for the Hell of it, 6 years ago I bought a silver crown sized, 1855 120 Grana coin from the "Kingdom of the Two Sicilies". I then started researching my ancestry and found out that my maternal great-grandfather was born in 1855, in Sicily. His wife, my Bis-Nonna, was born in 1858, in Sicily. So I got a 1858 Sicilian crown to match her birth year. I now have birth year coins for most of my ancestors going back to the 1700's.
