I don't put coins in Whitman folders, albums, or anything like that. If it's a "just for fun" or "coins from circulation" project, I'll use a Dansco album, at worst. If it's a set I want to keep for a while, no less than Intercept Shield for a raw set. 20 years in a Whitman album/folder is not good for coins. 20 years in the same cardboard is not good for coins. Yes, I am biased against Whitman albums and folders.
Toning is toning. But if you care to, you can separate it somewhat. Album toning has a different appearance from end-roll toning, envelop toning, bag toning, etc. Lance.
A meusem/archival quality product storing coins in a dark, dry, desert like place.. vs a Whitman album or Whitman folder stored in the same conditions. Environmental conditions being equal, I refuse to use a Whitman folder or album. PS - I think I have a few OLD OLD OLD Whitman albums. If anyone wants them, I'll give them to anyone free of charge. Got a Morgan album and the Walking Liberty albums for sure. Each garunteed to be at least 20 year old from a smoke free, dehumidifier on 24/7 home. Have to double check to make sure I didn't toss these in the trash. Now there's an idea for a long term experiement. Putting "gem BU" silver coins and copper coins in a Whitman, Dansco, and Interncept Shield album and storing them away in the same environmental conditions. Check on them at 3 month intervals. Anyone got the time?
I once started putting 1oz SAEs in a Dansco Album and after about 12 years, some of them took on this really really ugly brown toning. I would never put silver coins in an album if I wanted them to remain white.
You are correct that albums and folders contribute to toning. Many use them exactly for that reason. Everyone knows that attractive toning adds value. The problem is that attractive toning is unusual. More often than not the toning is ugly...spotty, dark, irregular. And, of course, not everyone agrees on what is pretty. I enjoy gorgeous toning but I build sets of untoned coins generally. I like this toned cent, for example, but it is not part of my wheaties set. Lance.
I have to agree with all the others - that said leave them alone and put them in a newer better album. Maybe an intercept shield item as recommended. PS - Nice collection.
Some people try to artificially tone there coins just to look like yours and in most of the cases the tone will look artificial..... Your coins took 40 years for this beautiful toning to happen.. so i suggest not to clean them ..... Nice collection :smile
