If you could buy just one (each selling at the same price), which would you prefer? 1. Unc roll of 1963 Franklin Half Dollars (20 coins), or 2. Unc roll of 1949 Jefferson Nickels (40 coins)?
Even if the price and speculation over silver were not involved, I'd take the half dollars. I have never been a big nickel collector.
I fell off the wagon a couple of nights ago and bid on a 1955 proof set (I'm a recovering Coin-a-Holic). I got sniped at the last moment (Thank God!), but saw another seller with a couple OBW (supposedly) rolls for sale. One is a 1963 roll of Unc Franklin Half Dollars and the other is an Unc roll of 1949 Jefferson nickels. I always assume eBay rolls are picked over MS62-MS63, average strike coins. Coincidently, bids on the rolls are nearly identical (currently). That suggests that the average eBay buyer values them equally. That's why I ask...if I decide to put in a last minute bid, which one should I try to win? I'm leaning towards the 1949 Jefferson nickels since I already have dozens of rolls of 1963 Franklin Halves and there are likely fewer 1949 Jefferson survivors. However, CT consensus opinion is to stick with the Frankies.
The 1955 Flat Pack Proof set is quite nice. The box sets usually have unattractively toned coins in them.
I ain't that BR549 guy for tarnation sakes...I can cipher...of course I'd take 40 coins bein its twice as much as 20!
The likelihood of gem Jeffs is pretty low so you’d likely buy them as a Jeff collector or you get to spend a bunch on pocket change. I’d go for the Franklins. UNC 1963s are common but it’s a nice pile of silver halves. Very liquid.
Well, I bid on the Frankies and won the auction with one (1) second left! ...then lost with Zero (0) seconds left. It was way too much, anyway. People are bidding crazy amounts for coins these days.
I lost both auctions. Winning bids were... 1. 1963 Franklin Halves: $238.50 2. 1949 Jefferson Nickels: $219.50
