Good evening everyone - I have this 1904 O Morgan Dollar with some serious clashing on both obverse and reverse. Problem is, I can't seem to match it exactlyto a VAM: Started with VAM-4B VAM-4B Rusty Fish Hook My coin: *does have the severe clashing around the lips and neck *does have strong clashing on the reverse by IN *does have strong clashing by the viewer's left wreath *doesn't have the Spiked 1 in the date *doesn't have the doubled 9 in the date *doesn't have the filled 4 in the date *doesn't have the clash by the hair's edge *doesn't have an obvious rim cud by PLURIBUS (which 4B doesn't have to have) *doesn't have the die polish lines in the eagle's wings *the reverse pitting by DOLLAR doesn't match my coin (honestly, my coin looks more like pitting from PVC damage, not raised bumps) So, I moved on to 35B: VAM-35B My coin: *does have the matching die cracks around the date, bridge of nose (along with clashing), and eagle's right wing BUT *doesn't have the parallel die gouges above A in DOLLAR, which is the primary die marker So, I checked VAM 35A VAM-35A My coin: *does seem to match all the clashes shown *doesn't have the rim cud by PLURIBUS So, which VAM is my coin? Can anyone help? I feel like I've looked around a lot and maybe am at the point where someone more experienced could help out. THANKS! Well, it's the morning . Make sure not to miss the scribbling by the eagle feet, wreath, and anywhere else in that area ...
I should be able to check tonight. Scribbling is only relevant for 1921. The patches of parallel lines you see is die polishing, which is different. While this can be helpful, it's not the main thing to look at when attributing a coin. Start with the date and mint mark position. For 1904-O, there are some doubled profiles, as well. The date has been studied thoroughly, so it should be possible to attribute, assuming the pictures you provided are clear (I'll have to wait until I get home to look at photos on imgur).
