I recently acquired this coin. From its weight of ca. 73.5 grams and size of 41.2 mm, it is probably a Ptolemaic bronze drachma. For the life of me, I cannot distinguish one Ptolemy from another but I am leaning to a Ptolemy III, Sear 7814 or maybe a Ptolemy IV, Sear 7841. Any help on nailing this down much appreciated.
Thanks. As I look closer I think I see the letter sigma or epsilon between the legs of the eagle, if that means anything.
Distinguishing one from another is not always easy and opinions have changed during my short collecting time. I still have to update the attributions of various Ptolemaic bronzes on my website because the latest thinking reassigned some. PtolemyBronze.com is the online place to go to sort this out. It's probably easiest to use their series-by-picture page: http://ptolemybronze.com/ptolemy_series.html Knowns for your coin: ~41 mm, ~74 gm Obv: Zeus Ammon Rev: eagle standing with closed wings, cornucopia in left field, Σ (maybe ΣΕ) between legs Scrolling down the series page linked above, the best match is Ptolemy IV, "Alexandria Series 5", Svoronos 992.
Every time this question arises, someone posts this link. http://ptolemybronze.com/ptolemy_series.html Did you look there? I have a few coins of this series but am not a specialist or expert. I feel completely incapable of improving my ID of them over what I determined looking at the examples on this site. Does that mean I have correct ID's for all my coins? No, but it does mean I have a chance of being right that I did not before I looked. Are any of the ID's given there wrong/outdated? Probably. Was I able to get an ID from your data and photo? No. Could the E between the legs be something else?
