Hi, i'm thinking of adding a 12D to my collection. Both coins are priced similar. The back of the coins pics are pretty small and sorry. Which of the 2 would you guys or galls think is better? First or 2nd coin? If you can't see, the first penny has stronger wheat lines..
I would call that a draw from the obverse photos. I tend to make my wheat cent calls based on the condition of the wheat stalks..... But these days my vision is so deteriorated that it wouldn’t much matter.
Yup there is some type of pit right under the "IN" but the stronger wheat stalk makes this a tough choice
Whenever possible, avoid a coin with problems (damage, cleaning, corrosion) IMO. The reason it's cheaper is likely due to that pit and the gouge behind the ear. Also, could green spot still be active corrosion? I'm not wild about the ding on the neck in #2 either, but I like it better than 1. I know it's hard sometimes as a collector, and I was in your shoes quite a bit, but knowing what I know now after 50 years of collecting, I would keep looking
The corrosion on the first and the dark surfaces bother me. The second has a couple major marks but better color and surfaces. I prefer that one
Assuming this is for a Whitman or Dansco, #2 would suffice. I don't particularly like the look of either, but I'm not much of a Wheat guy. I know this is a better date and can be tempting to buy one at a good price, but it's not that much of a better date--better, more attractive coins will come along.
I collect lincolns and zincolns, and I would keep looking. Lots of better coins almost everyday popup somewhere for sale. After all, there are billions of them, even millions of the wheaties save for a few rarer ones.
I don't collect date / mint mark sets, but I know that's one of the risks associated with doing so. It can easily become less about the coin and more about filling the hole. Yes, patience is of the essence.
The corrosion on the first one instantly rules it out. I can't see the reverse of the second one, but the obverse isn't bad.
