#2 is Fake, denticals have hot marks. Also the 8 near the 1 in the date is off real bad.

Boy coin number 1 looks like my 1890cc hope that is real or you have me thunking.

    Thanks for the great thread.

edit to add It fooled me. It is the pics that really make people think. Again thanks. I was wrong.. Answer was posted after the real coin in above thread was revealed.

Thanks. It can be really hard to tell the difference with the better counterfeits, and the less than perfect key dates. That is why good date coins should ALWAYS be purchased from a reputable person in a slab. Raw coins are fine, but not for these difficult dates, unless one is willing to take a risk.

On my screen this is coin #1 or top or white background, whatever you want to call it. I remember you have posted this in the Morgan thread in the past. You're saying that this is the fake? I would have swore that coin #2 or bottom or blue background is the fake coin.

The one in the PCGS slab is the real one. I understand that the display can be either side by side, or one on top of another. This is the top (or left) coin that is real, and the picture shows it in a very real PCGS slab.

Can we bomb China now? This is more justification than we had with Iraq imho [IMG]

Is there any explanation as to why the "real" coin has such an odd appearance to the D in Dollar?

I agree #2 is fake, the date keyed it for me, especially the 1. The top is malformed and the base of the 1 is too small.

Well, in the words of the J-man (one of eBay's most prolific sellers of replicas prior to the ban):

"These coins are only to make your collection more perfect; please do not buy them as genuine"

Personally, I don't have a problem with the Chinese (or anyone else for that matter) selling replicas for what they are... replicas.

Sage advice. I do not walk around telling everyone to buy slabs, but especially for 19th century silver dollars of all sorts I believe the authentication of slabs is invaluable. Heck, at this point, if I were going to buy almost any high dollar US coin I would probably buy a slab. Not for grade or anything, but mostly as protection from better counterfeits out there nowadays.
