Which do you think would be a better long term investment or are they the same? 1/10 American Gold Eagle or 2012 1/10 Gold Dragon
Bullion wise, they were the same, but the dragon could possibly be a better date in the far future, depending on how many of them they make in the other years of the series.
Dragon > AGE. Why? Because the AGE is mass produced compared to the Dragon, which is limited. Not only that, but the Lunar series coins are usually a hit and the dragon is wayyy up there on list. The Chinese sure love them!
If you are in the USA, most definitely the AGE. 22K vs 24K is irrelevant. Foreign coins are more difficult to sell in comparison.
I don't. For an average foreign coin, I would agree. For a chinese lunar coin, especially a dragon, I do not. The dragon in one of the top three signs for a child to be born under, and is a very auspicious symbol to billions of people. I see the dragon as having much better investment potential than any AGE.
Lets say 5-10 years from now.. Will the dragon sell at a higher premium compared to the AGE or probably just the same price since they are both bullion 1/10oz?
No. I use the pawn shop test. Take it down there to pawn for some money. The dealer will give you more for the AGE than the Dragon. This is because they won't consider numismatic value and the AGE is easily recognized where the dragon isn't.
That is the debate. If the purpose is investment, the AGE will more reliably track the price of gold. The dragon depends on collector sentiment which may be greater or less than now.
I would think this would be a valid study. Go on ebay and watch the auction selling prices for the 2000 AGE and also the 2000 Dragon. This was the last year the dragons were minted. This should give you a better world-view approximation of which coin will be worth more 12 years from now. The issue I have found with dealers in our own country is they can be very provincial in their view of coins and have a bias toward U. S. coins. Since ebay is worldwide in terms of both buyers and sellers, you should get a less myopic view. This way, you are comparing apples to apples and not just basing the decision on general factors. With a little digging, you should also be able to determine the mintage numbers for the 2000 coins.
The most important factor between these two coins is the mintage. As stated above the dragon is limited and the AGE is only constrained by the number the mint is able to sell. As far as the pawn shop test - I can't believe that any shop would pay more than melt on any bullion coin no matter what a collector may think it's worth.
Maybe. I think one of the lunar series coins from the China mint would do better than one with Queen Elizabeth stamped on the back of it. I think the Lunar Fan series is particularly attractive.
