    I looked it up yesterday , and Wikipedia has 3 main theories , none of them proved . Also they differentiate from the single line and double line thru the S .

    I always get such a kick out of you telling me what my own words mean Brandon :rolleyes:

    Really ? And to think I managed to do that with one simple sentence :rolleyes:

    Tell ya what Brandon, here's our dollar sign - $

    Here's the Potosi mint mark -

    I suggest letting people draw their own conclusions. Feel better now ?

    It's hard to think that I "read" too much into your words Doug when you stated "The Potosi mint mark, is even the source of our dollar sign - contrary to what many think."

    That sounds pretty definitive to me, and even defensive since you stated it was contrary to what many think. Now, the Potosi mint-mark theory is one that's out there, but it's not at the top of the most accepted list, and most people in the the colonial US would have never even seen the Potosi mint mark as most peso de ocho that circulated in North America were Mexico mint coins.

    So your evidence is that it looks vaguely like the dollar sign. Well, so does a P over an S, or a line through the number 8, or all of the other theories. I'll go so far as to say it looks vaguely like the rod of Asclepius also, that doesn't mean I'd throw that hypothesis out there.

    My point was simple: you stated it was a done deal, and it's not. Now, when you publish your scholarly article on the issue with full citations and historical validation, I'll change my mind. Until then, I'll go with the scholarly work that's currently available.

    :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: indeed
