Back in the days when gold freely circulated there were many countries which produced coins with a consistent design year-after-year. I'm thinking of French Roosters, French Angels, British Sovereigns, etc. Several other countries both in Europe and the rest of the world did likewise. I am not thinking of commemoratives or one-coin types, medieval or modern. Of all of these countries which do you think produced the most attractive circulating gold coinage? Personally I've always liked the flowing design of the Turkish coinage. I find it much more pleasant that formality of most European products.
I believe most here will say the US, with St Gauden and indian head designs. While I like those myself, (the $10 being my favorite), I also love Mexican gold, specifically the 20 and 50 peso pieces.
I'm insanely jealous of Arabic calligraphy. The psychedelic poster lettering of the 1960s just isn't the same.
Here is one of my favorite Countries for AV coinage AV 4 Dukaten 1931 Belgrade Mint Alexander I /Queen Maria Yugoslavia
Perhaps I am one of the few here who is not taken with US gold. I admit a St Gaudens is a beautiful coin, but none of the other excite me too much. I have some (not a double eagle - above my budget) but prefer to look further afield.
Yes and no. My coin definately never circulated, it is prooflike brilliant uncirculated. But these 4 dukaten/ 1 Dukat coins issued from 1931-33 were minted as trade coinage. Probably, same way the US St. Gaudens Double Eagles were intended for commerce. John
All of the Yugoslavia coinage from that era were given a "countermark" Mine has a "Corn Ear" for Bosnia There was also a "sword" countermark for Serbia
Here is another really nice design. My AV Dukat ND Imperial City of Regensburg/Germany Holy Roman Emperor Franz II 1792-1806 obv. City View rev. Imperial Eagle
The only entity which produced a coin of the same design for a longer period of time was the city state of Venice, it was the original ducat. And it was produced for 503 years. But it doesn't fit your parameters because they stopped producing in 1787 I believe it was.
France has always produced nice looking coins, especially these two: France 20 Francs gold 1898 Angel France 20 Francs gold 1912 Marianne-Rooster
