I only collect British coins seriously. I do retain some non British pieces - mostly Crown size and they have to be well designed and attractive. I don't tolerate any of the modern "made to be collectible" pieces, not even the British stuff. Someone on another forum refers to these as "gewgaws", which is a great old-fashioned word for worthless but shiny tat. Until a couple of years ago I did quite a bit of dealing. I always found Belgian coins the most difficult to sell - there just seemed to be too few collectors for these.
No BOOM yet! Seriously, I have no interest in Euros from any country...boring and mostly ugly to me. Bruce
I think there will be no BOOM as long as people are respectful in their comments. If I say: "I don't like the coins of Nemoland much", no one can really take offence - I am simply expressing my preference. If I say: "All the coins of Nemoland are absolute trash and should be culled on sight!", then the ardent collectors of Nemolandia are likely to go boom. Of course, there is no Nemoland as far as I know, but with the lack of education in Geography these days, some unscrupulous mint could start producing coins for that Country and many modern collectors would not even realise they were being taken for a ride. Crowd funding for a new enterprise anyone?
I like finding them in circulation when I'm in the Euro Zone. One of my favorite things about visiting a foreign country is finding dates I need in circulation.
Easy answer/ China never struck any classical gold coinage/ and I am not a fan of any modern stuff/ except the UK gold/ since its still made in the old tradition.
There are quite a few MIA dropped accidently/ thru malfunctions! Hopefully the Russians did not loose any Tsar Bombas. Really stupid thing to waste $$$$ on! Should try to do more positive things.
I agree about Belgium. I always found those hard to sell and I don't like most of their designs. Some of the 19th century coins have nice lions but the 20th century coins don't do much for me.
There are no countries' coins that I don't want to collect. Having said that I don't cope with squiggles for text very well, so tend to have less interest in that sort of thing.
I don't collect much modern coinage, but that's more a matter of finding older designs more beautiful and/or having greater historical significance, rather than specifically avoiding any country's coins. I do avoid NCLT issued by smaller countries solely to sell to collectors, with no real chance of circulating in the home country. But even there, it's about avoiding particular coins rather than countries. Liberia, for example, has issued a great deal of NCLT crap that I would probably refuse even if offered for free, but I'd certainly consider buying a 19th century Liberian coin like this:
I don't collect most post-WW2 world coinage, so that rules out a lot of post-Colonial coinage. I'll make an occasional exception for an interesting design, though. I do like Chinese coinage a lot, but the high volume of fakes/replicas discourages me from buying it from most sources these days. I also try to avoid coinage from actively disputed areas where I might be inadvertently funding an ongoing civil war by buying them. Similarly, I wouldn't want to collect North Korean coinage. Here's an exception to my modern disputed territory rule, from Western Sahara. And for coins from earlier civil wars, I don't worry about funding long-ended conflicts. So here's a coin from the failed Birafran war of independence.
Like you I have few moderns that I like. However I think Biafran coins are beautifull! I have the 5 coin 69 Proof set/ Valcambi Mint/ Swiss.
I refuse to collect any modern Chinese coins, especially pandas, because of their government’s total disinterest in combating the counterfeit problem.
A case could be made for Chu Block money, though. I would agree that the early Electrum pieces don't qualify.
Except for ??? Mister! But that’s Pam and dad coins! Which Santa will do better and stick with US next time lol!
- Russia, Austria and other countries officially minting restrikes with incorrect dates - China, Thailand and other countries using completely different characters - Tuvalu - do I really have to explain?
I'm going to say Pakistan, Israel and Canada. I have many coins from each country, but I can't say that I'm a collector of each. my collecting interest changes a lot, so maybe I'll change my mind.
