I would have to go with type 4. I enjoy collecting as much as hopeing someday to benefit greatly from their sale.

    Category "4" with an addendum

I checked 4 but the truth is that only my children will ever realize any kind of profit on my investment. I collect with that in mind at all times. It makes it easier to collect because I get to collect moderns that will have value to them but not necessarily to someone my age.

I think I'm a type 2. I'd love to make a profit someday, but I find it almost impossible to sell something I don't have 2 or 3 duplicates of. Good poll.

I'd say that description pretty firmly places you in the Type 2 category. Pure collecting goodness... a lover of coins... very admirable.

    Hmmm... a Quasi-Type 5??? COLLECTOR/investor...

I'm enjoying this poll, and I like the fact that people are describing the reasons for their choice. It's an interesting study on what drives different collectors. In some ways it is providing me with ideas and thoughts about my own current and future collecting goals.

Thanks to all who are participating! :hail:

I am so much a type 1 hoarder. Not with just coins either. Example is New Years Resolution for 2006 was to get rid of at least one item a day, every day from then on. I have done this and my house still looks like a museum.

I'm surprised to see that so far there are more who chose hoarder type over investor type... would love to hear comments from them as well.

You "just don't got it like all of that"? What does that mean?

Means that I'm not so set in my finances that I can reason holding a coin that I know I can make a good profit off of... no matter how much I'd like to keep it.

Apologies... educated and proper as I can be, I'm originally from Philadelphia, and a little ghetto slips out from time to time...

Check M All here is your discription of a type II collector LOL

Type 2. The Collector - This person knows his stuff. He has read the books and can practically tell you what page of what book by what author you can find information about a particular coin. He buys his coins with no real thought of what they may be worth later. Having the coin, completing the set, studying, learning and appreciating are his primary drives. He would not hesitate to pay a high price to get that one missing piece, but could never dream of selling his collection.... that's what heirs are for.

Me I know very little about coins (Constanty learning) I cant tell you page by page LOL I dont have to compleat sets as most of what I collect is not set based :smile and I certainly would not dream of paying over the odds for a coin (Never pay more than $2 a coin I say  ) I dont have Heirs cus im taking it all with me :eek:hya:

Okay... Well, De Orc, sorry to say that you don't fall into any of my categories. :p You, sir, are a renegade... an error coin, if you will, that has found its way into my type set. As much as I'd like to keep you, I'm thinking to get you certified and slabbed and list you on eBay.

I think the monetary "value" of any collectible is part of the appeal. And I don't know any collector who doesn't want the "value" of his or her collection to go up. So I think most people are going to be in catagory 4.
(value is in quotes, because any coin, like any collectible, is worth exactly what someone else will pay for it, no more no less)

thunder_puck nice to meet you :kewl: you have finaly met a collector who honestly dont bother checking the value of his collection cus he dont care LOL I collect for my enjoyment not for profit now or in the future.

I'm not trying to be difficult, but I would say I fall into two categories depending on the series in question.
For example, I'm a caterogy 4 when it comes to certain denominations and collections, but I consider myself a category 2 for others (with the exception of citing page numbers of reference materials). For example, my Buffallo Nickel and French Gold collections are just that...collections. I acquire these coins and have a fair share of knowledge, would never sell, and I buy based on grade, condition, strike, and the thrill of the hunt. Price doesn't matter, unless its ridiculous.

Regarding my type 4 personality, generally I don't like to sell any coins, but I do foster a "good deal mentailty". I will sell a category 4 coin if I can make a profit to fund my type 2 collections....but then follows seller's remorse

Think you need a fifth type.

The Beginner (that's me even though I have some coins I have collected for over 20 years) The beginner probably does not know if they will be type two or type four over time and type one and type three probably know what they are even if they are just beginning.

I think I will become more and more like type four but intrest fluxuates as lifes demands keep me busy at times. (two young kids will do that). Love learning about old coins and the history surrounding them. As each new coin is attributed, a new lesson begins about the history.

Thanks to everyone who helps me start that lesson by helping a begginer find information about the coins I buy and clean...

    Best Regards,

    Darryl

I'm a beginner as well. I was getting nervous about not falling into any of the categories until I got to 4. That one seemed to suit me to a Tee. I so far have only bought rolls of coins from the mint and a couple of silver proof sets. I have the desire to be able to make money off of my coins someday in the future since I have no children to pass on anything to. Next year I expect my coin buying budget to increase dramatically and plan on being able to purchase atleast 2 or more of everything I enjoy looking at so that I may be able to find it easier to sell off some for a lil profit. I will have to find someone or some place to donate anything I have left when I die. That is if I make it long enough to build up a nice stash of coins. :)
