Ohhhh, so you mean where the coin really is a 65, and they put down 63, they meant to put a 68? Now THAT makes perfect sense. Mystery solved.

De nada, baby. (As they say in da 'hood.) I still buy plastic/Mylar 2x2's from them. I just did an order last month.

 

All of the services have their bad days. It's just with some of them, every day is a bad day except for the worse days.

I have an MMNS 3CS graded VG8 that's actually VF30 - but that's down to zero understanding of the series.

I also have an NGC XF45 that was in an ICG AU50 holder which the dealer was so embarrassed about HE cracked it out to sell raw.

And there are the Stack's 57th St Collection NGC holders of which the best that can be said is that most of the grades were gifts from NGC to Stacks.

 

Oh thank Gawd you confirmed this - I thought I needed new glasses. I've only seen two or three "S57" slabs, but to say the grades were, umm, optimistic(?) is an understatement.

 

UPDATE:

Hey Kurt- Check this out. I called Eagle. I talked to some guy named Bob, nice guy! I told him what I was looking for. A specific box to hold the old ANACS white soap bar slabs. He said he knew exactly what I was talking but they haven't been made or kept in stock for years. So I said, okay thanks anyway, and hung up.

Fast forward two hours. The phone rings, it's Bob. He said he went to the warehouse and found one! Can you believe that? He said it was a used one but he would sell it to me. So @TJ1952 bought it!

Cool. Wait until you get it. Then, if you like it, I have two more for you, if you'd like them. I'm getting my ANACS small slabs redone into NGC's anyway. When you get it, and if you want two more, PM me, or "Conversation" me or whatever, and I'll be glad to ship them out to you. My gift to you. I hate wasting stuff.

 

I certainly appreciate that very much, thank you! I think one box is plenty though. I thing I have about 13 of those soap bar slabs. One box should do it. How many does one box hold?

 

24, if memory serves. 3 rows of 8. Okay, same offer goes out to all other ANACS small slab holders. I know I have at least two available, perhaps as many as 4. I'll check tonight. I vaguely remember picking up two extra some time back, but I am advancing rapidly toward an Alzheimer's future.

The slabs go in tilted backward somewhat so you can see part of the label. 3 rows wide, 8 slots deep. Small slab ANACS and older smaller CoinWorld self-slabs only fit. The CW ones are a tad snugger than the ANACS.

 

Why? The official ANA grader is no different then any other official this or that of x, the ANA didn't sit down and have a rigorous discussion of who does the best job or anything like that.

 

You're absolutely correct. But I greatly and gladly support the ANA with both my time AND my funds, and NGC has done so with at least their funds. This designation did NOT come free, right? I admire and enjoy the ANA immensely, and I am one of their biggest and loudest cheerleaders, so I put my LOYALTY with others who also do.

I would assume it was a highest bidder type scenario or some combination of that and a benefit to members.

 

Both are my assumptions as well. I vaguely remember a bidding process, with PCGS then being rather uninterested. Again, only a vague recollection. If I were (and I'm not - hence the choice) motivated by resale value maximization and/or liquidity, I'd probably endure what I call the abuse by PCGS and use them anyway. As it is, every coin I personally send in for slabbing is, at the time, intended to be a "forever after" coin to be passed down to my son. Therefore, PCGS' current state as being perceived as numero uno may be transitory and not valid by then.

If they keep screwing up at the rate I've seen lately, it could be invalid by next week.

 

I personally like the way they grade a lot of series better and like their clear slab a lot better. Biggest complaint about NGC has always been the use of those white prongs, I like their black slabs so much better than the white. That said PCGS does need to get their turn around times down and get that problem solved or it won't be long until they are losing significant business to them.

 

See? I actually prefer an opaque slab, aesthetically. Yes, I like the black better; it's very slick looking, but it's only offered on certain series. I like a consistent look. To me, the biggest negative hit on PCGS' reputation was the way the Kennedy 2014 gold pieces were handled. NGC required receipts from the show floor. PCGS did not, and VERY MANY, perhaps a solid majority of, PCGS "Chicago show floor bought" slabbed coins were and are "fly-ins" from the mint locations, not show floor coins at all. Yes, the whole subject is sketchy, but still, NGC did a better job.

 

If my slabs are going to have a color like NGCs do, I basically prefer anything but white. I wish the black was their standard. I could see having a different color for copper, but gold and silver have a nice contrast with the black

I doubt there were many if any flyins. That would up the cost significantly and NGC was attributing mint location buys anyway. I passed by one and saw the dealers waiting outside buying from people as they walked out the door. You can find the mint store location releases attributed as such from NGC that the big buyers were getting.

More importantly though there were only a couple hundred sold at each of those locations if I remember right and then they stopped sales anyway. There just weren't enough sold for fly ins. The ANA show had the bulk of their in person sales by far.
