I only like the way toning looks on Copper Cents. Not on any other denomination.. #2 is my favorite. MS 65
I was torn on this one. I think the blast white coin is higher grade and better struck...but I just like #1 better. I really like the subtle rainbow on #1. I know that war nickels can REALLY tone and I honestly think this one is not THAT toned for a war nickel...but I just really like how it has toned. It's just a really nice looking coin.
I voted for #2. I think the surfaces are a bit cleaner particularly the fields and the Monticello. I think both are almost full steps and appear to have the same bridging of steps under column 3. I think the toning on 1 is a bit splotchy although the colors are very nice. I also don’t like the rim ding at 7 o’clock. I think coin #2 could sneak into a FS holder on a great day with decent weather depending on how much sleep the grader got the night before and if him & his wife are on good terms. As mentioned this is the DDO for this date. It also appears to have matching spike coming from just above the chin which may be another die marker for the DDO. Coin 1 66+ Coin 2 67FS which would be a top pop or close to it.
They're both scrumptious. I picked #2, although I'm a sucker just about every time these days for that understated rainbow toning, so this wasn't an easy one.
Anybody wanna change their mind after seeing the grades? Congrats to @kSigSteve who nailed the grade of the untoned coin at MS67 5FS which has a total population of 5/0 btw.
Nice! I wonder if they netted the 65 due to the small rim ding. It looks every bit of a 66 in terms of eye appeal. I thought the steps were a bit too weak to get the designation but I guess the powers at be determined they are there. Bottom one is definitely top pop material. What’s the difference in registry points between the two out of curiosity.
I picked #1 (toned) but it was close. I figured #2 was the higher grade (before seeing the reveal...I'm slightly surprised that it's a two point spread but #2 does clearly have less hits).
That #2 is just a couple tiny scratches away from a 68. Good to see they gave you a solid, honest grade on it. Your #1 has to command a premium over and above the price guide on that grade.
I'm surprised by the 5FS designations on both of them. Both appear to have flattened areas just to the right of the 3rd pillar that would preclude an FS designation. Could just be the pics.
