Some years ago, I read a couple of interesting facts about currency -
Damaged currency is returned to the BEP (I think it's the BEP) where it is destroyed.

Damaged currency can be redeemed at face value so long as the denomination and serial number can be read.

Dirty currency used to be washed in the above facility.

I wonder what they use to wash money? Is the money considered laundered afterward?

The pictures I saw were of large commercial front loading machines.

The BEP used large, purpose-built machines operated by a person on each end. These photos are dated 1912.

    I think.

The notes were placed between two canvas conveyor belts and then they traveled through a custom cleaning solution before being rinsed and coming out the other end. They washed the notes to prolong their life. The printers union wasn’t too thrilled about the idea and looked at it as a threat to their job.

    That explains the conveyor belt.

They claimed they could wash 80,000 notes a day.

Years ago, I dated a bank teller, she would save interesting currency for me. Before I knew better I'd put the bills in the pockets of khaki pants then wash them.
The end result looked pretty good to me.

I've seen them but I don't follow them. I only have the Internet through my cell phone and it's just not worth it on this small device.

I've washed currency ... normal machine, a few drops of soap on the gentle cycle.

    Cool Iron (cotton temp)

It was a really ratty strap of $1 from BofA at one of the ends of the earth.

They came out very nice for stamping and I did get a hit on one of those bills 9 years later.

Yes they do. Several months back there was news that currency was being decontaminated because of fentanyl and other drugs present, and to help stop coronavirus spread. Wish I could find the article. It might have been in Coin World.

Defacement is generally defined as: to mutilate, cut, disfigure, perforate, unite or cement together, or do any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit.

Writing on a note does not render it unfit and the last thing a Where's George-er wants to do is have their note taken out of circulation. There is no intent to render a note unfit.

Lastly, banks and the Federal Reserve don't just yank tons of notes out of circulation left and right because they may have a bit of writing on them..

Notes are expensive to print, expensive to shred and expensive to store until they're able to shred them.

It's in their best interest to keep note circulating for as long as possible.

I confirmed that with the teller at my credit union, just because its stamped
does it make it unfit, so thats good news, however I have deposited over
$1,500 in notes with only 4 returning and that average sucks !! so not
sure what the issue is there ?? maybe different banks of other policy
as all my free goes through Bank of America, will probably make some
deposit at my credit union and make my odds will go up?

Also another issue I am having with Bank of America teller is they are rejecting
my $100,s and $10, with the where's George stamp on them, not sure what's
going on in that camp ??
