In 1980, my mom was in high school. In 1989, I was four. Needless to say, my collection didn't amount to much back then.
In 1980 I was setting up with a dealer who was buying gold and silver. I was buying the other non-precious metal coins that were brought in. As far as collecting I think I had recently finished up my shield nickels and working on my seated half dimes. In 1989, I was still buying early date large cents at prices WELL below what I have to pay for them today. I was also starting to look at Conder tokens and laughing at the fools paying $1K for MS-65 1881-S dollars.
In 1980, I was 7 years old and causing trouble in school and back then I did not know what gold or silver was. I was not collecting anything back then. I was too busy getting on my parents nerves. In 1989, I was 16 years old and was still causing trouble in school but I heard of gold and silver and knew what it looked like but I was not in a position (i.e. no job) to buy any gold or silver nor did I care at that particular point in my life. I was too busy reading and collecting comic books. I was not into gold and silver back in the '80's and I did not know anything about the coin market during that time.
